Tear Gas Canisters Found in Surf at Delaware Seashore State Park; Public
Asked to Call 911 if Canisters Are Found
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control advises the
public that State Park Rangers at Delaware State Seashore Park found tear
gas canisters floating in the surf this morning on the south side of the
Indian River Inlet.
The public is asked to call 911 if they spot any canisters and to provide
the location where the canister was observed. The canisters should not be
touched.
The canisters are green, approximately 12 to 14 inches, with a label
marked, "CN/X5 Crowd Disperser Pressurized Tear Gas - Manufactured by
Penguin Associates, Inc., Malvern, Pennsylvania, USA." The canisters look
like a small fire extinguisher. It is olive green with silver and red at
the top end.
Also found today several miles south at Breakwater Beach were pepper fog
canisters. These canisters are white, slightly smaller than the tear gas
canisters, approximately 8 to 11 inches with a white label and black
lettering. The public is again advised not to touch the canisters, to call
911 if any of the pepper fog canisters are seen and to provide the
location.
DNREC Secretary John A. Hughes has ordered department Enforcement Officers
to drive the length of the beaches to check for any additional canisters.
As of 4:30 p.m., seven tear gas canisters have been recovered and turned
over to the Delaware State Police.
