Long distance trip

  • So, I feel like these topics have a lot of interest but never seem to go anywhere.

I'm looking for something different than RC ...

Harlan, KY - 560 mi from wilmington one way http://www.harlancountytrails.com/blackmountain.php
Tellico - I know there have been talks about trail closures, it's a little farther and I haven't necessarily heard great things, but I'd try it once.
Uwharrie - Unsure about this also
Telluride, CO - Black Bear Pass and Imogene Pass etc are on my bucket list
Moab, UT - this pretty much goes without saying, but I added these up here for completeness

    Anyone have any good finds?

    Any interest, timelines, extra info?

  • I had been planning on a light-moderate wheeling trip in the SW Colorado and Moab area until work cut my schedule and dropped my income by 18%. Sigh... I've still got several guidebooks to the SW Colorado area. The San Juan Mountains have a lot of good and scenic trails and some more challenging stuff are available. Plus Moab is only 3 hours away from Ouray, CO where I planned to stay. My trip was going to be almost 3 weeks long, with the plan to spend 2 full weeks out there and the rest for driving time there and back. Mostly doing the CO trails but 2 or 3 days around Moab.

Some of the links I have saved..

http://www.traildamage.com/google_colorado.php - list of most of the trails in CO. check the site for the Utah stuff.

    Jerry / Whatevah

2020 Gladiator Mojave - 33" Falken mud tires, LoD side steps, Zroadz bed rack, Quadratec QRC winch bumper, Superwinch EPi 9.0, Kleinn on-board air, Kleinn air horns, lots of lights, Yaesu ham radio with GPS tracker.

Gone- 2012 JK Rubicon with stuff. Long gone- Long-arm 2001 Cherokee with stuff.

  • a little closer to home there's rock run (it's still there, right? i've never been.) and there's reading anthracite.

soon, hopefully, northumberland will be on the list.

  • kyle & steph (from PAP) now operate badlands off road park in Indiana.
not that the mention of the state of Indiana ever conjures up images of rugged mountains in my mind

  • X2

Haha, asses. The decision for the truck was because I wanted to go farther :)

Harlan is also my first choice. Rock Run, I would go with, but it was either "simple stuff" or "you can only do this with 37s and up". Billy, post up dates that would work!

Cool cool, did not know about badlands.

  • I was thinking about a Uwharrie for a while now. I thinks it about a 6 hr drive from Dover. There are some very nice camp grounds close to the trails.

But the KY trip looks awesome...

Quick dana 35 test: kick one of the rear tires. If the axle breaks, it&#039;s a 35<br />01 TJ Sahara<br />TJ- 4.0 5spd, 8.8, RE 4.5&quot; lift, RC X-Flex Arms, 1&quot; BL w/ MM Lift, Clayton/JKS Trackbars, 33&#039;s, Rusty&#039;s Rock Bumpers, XRC Sliders, PIAA&#039;s, Delta H4 Conv, CB, Skids<br />Future Mods: Going back to 3&quot; springs with Johnny Joints on all the arms.

  • "you can only do this with 37s and up".

sal, knowing you, i would call that a challenge rather than a deterrent.

  • I would make the ride to Harlan. I wanted to try to go this year anyway.

I am originally from Raleigh NC, and I have been to Uwharrie a few times. I went down last year with my jeep, and it was fun but not really a challenge. It is great if you wanna ride trails, and do a mild black every once and a while. It is awsome for camping though... you can pretty much camp wherever you want on the trails. If you want an idea of the toughest thing there just look up Kodiak Rock on youtube. It will end up being about 7-7.5 hours from Dover.

Precisely, mild trails are not what I think the club is looking for. I have about 6 or 7 shirts from Big Dogs now and was hoping there'd be enough interest in setting up an annual long distance trip if there were unique and difficult trails like we find at Big Dogs. As far as the sights, I'm all about it but I was assuming that'd be a personal vacation sort of deal.

  • I would love to do something like this...we've been talking about CO for a couple years now at least. The problem is always how do I make sure I can get back over such a large distance. I have AAA but I think they would figure it out if they towed me 100 miles, I called for another tow, 100 miles, rinse and repeat. :) Consider me interested but TBD depending on the details, would at least be willing to ride shotty with someone.

  • Well, since there is some interest, how does going to Harlan, KY as soon as in the Fall sound? First week in November? Drive down Thursday and drive back on Sunday or Monday?

The vehicle permit costs $20 for 31 days, or $35 for 12 months. The park is hosting a Rough Country Suspension event this weekend with 250 registered vehicles. It has a couple hundred miles of Jeep/ATV trails and 8,000 acres. No reservations or trail guides needed. They provide maps which indicate the difficulty of each trail, blue, green, orange, and red. Judging from their descriptions I think there would be enough for 2 - 3 days of wheeling and they would meet our difficulty expectations, but that's just my intuition.

Plenty of campgrounds and they also have RV parking. Bath houses with showers. There's also lodging nearby.

  • I'm interested but doubtful I'll be able to do another long distance trip until next year...kinda blew my wad w/ moab as far as work's concerned. I'll be able to sneak the couple days for bigdogs in the fall but that's about it other than 'normal' RC trips.
