catalytic converter rattle.

  • hey guys i have had my jeep for about 8 to 9 months. I bought it used, did a lift, did 33s and i have a problem.
My catalytic converter is starting to rattle pretty loudly, i thought it was the heat shield however i spent a few hours under my jeep the other day and found nothing to be loose at all. the jeep only has 75k miles on it, has anyone else had this problem with their 08 jk 2 doors. or jk's in general.
i was reading the EPA emissions warranty and it looks like i may be able to get it replaced for free from the dealership. does anyone have any experience with this?

As always, any and all thoughts and help is greatly appreciated. Stay safe out there!

  • Call dealer and give them your vin and mileage. u should fall under the fed 8/80 rule and get a free one.

  • They will probably only warranty it under the 8/80 emissions if you fail emissions.

I doubt a rattle will qualify.

Rattling cat means the catalyst has separated from the housing thus a failed emissions component. It should qualify but who knows what the dealer will do.

  • Thanks Aaron, that's what I plan on doing, calling them tomorrow.
Thanks everyone else for the help as well.

I figure If they say I have to have proof of a failed emission I could always go to the DMV and request an emission test.

  • Converter failure is a failure however it takes place. It should definitely be covered under that warranty, shouldn't matter if it sets a code/ fails emissions or not.

    From the EPA page:

    A. Performance Warranty

The Performance Warranty covers repairs which are required during the first 2 years or 24,000 miles of vehicle use (whichever first occurs) because the vehicle failed an emission test. Specified major emission control components are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles (whichever first occurs). If you are a resident of an area with an Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program that meets federal guidelines, you are eligible for this warranty protection provided that:
Your car or light-duty truck fails an approved emissions test; and
    • Your vehicle is less than 2 years old and has less than 24,000 miles (up to
8 years/80,000 miles for certain components); and
    • Your state or local government requires that you repair the vehicle; and
    • The test failure does not result from misuse of the vehicle or a failure to follow the
    manufacturers’ written maintenance instructions; and
You present the vehicle to a warranty-authorized manufacturer representative, along
with evidence of the emission test failure, during the warranty period.

Not sure how the JK is setup, but on the TJ the main cat is not monitored, therefore cannot cause a code to be set. And the precats do all of the real work, you can pass the DE sniffer test with a hollow main cat.

    Nothing wrong with trying.

  • I replaced a lot of cats under warranty when I was working at a dealer. No one ever had to prove they failed emissions. If it's rattling its bad and should be replaced.

^^This. Most dealers will just replace it. We do them all the time for noises.

  • dealer just called and said "your cat is fine, it was the heat shield above the Y pipe."
Im almost positive that i checked all the heat shielding, but i could've been wrong. I hope the rattle is fixed.
and if it was just the heat shield then i feel SOOOOO STUPID. !

    :bang:

  • Meh, it happens... Sometimes it's the simple things that will drive you crazy. I'll be worried the day I DON'T hear any rattles, creaks or noises!!

Your life is made up of 2 dates and a dash... make the most of the dash!

  • So, day one with the jeep back.
    Rattle is officially gone.
    I feel stupid :cuss: ,
but at least the sound isn't eating me alive anymore. thank god for that.
    thanks everyone for your help.
