Detroit Locker play/slop?

  • I have an 8.8 with a Detroit locker. With the trans in neutral I can rotate the driveshaft almost 30 degrees before the rear "engages" or another way to phrase it is that I can rotate the driveshaft an 1/8th to 1/4 turn before the tires move. Is this much slop normal?

That's about right on a Detroit. It's one of the reasons you'll hear a 'bang' when shifting into gear, as the driveshaft has to make that slight rotation before engaging.
