55 gallon drum would be too thin and wouldn't retain the heat well. As for a keg, it might be iffy because it's aluminum and I'm not sure how thick it is. But it's worth looking onto.
I'm debating whether to add a slightly larger or smaller diameter around or inside the fire box to semi-insulate it.
Here's what I'm looking at for a concept.
Why does the firebox need to be round? Seems easy enough to fab it out of some steel plate. Plasma cutter and a welder would make a cube pretty quick.

I was thinking cutting the center out of a few steel rims and welding them together might work but that might be too small.
