Colby Valves

  • I impulse bought a pair of these the other day, seems like it's a relatively new product/company but I've ripped a valve stem before and I have been on trail rides where others have too. It's a pita. We'll see if they work one of these days....

  • Looks like the wing nut draws the back of the valve in, mushrooming out the rubber seat/ bushing. Pretty ingenious.

  • Meh, Half a day to have it fixed . Wow.
How much do they run ?

I carry spare regular vavle stems. If one gets damaged. Only need maybe 20 minutes to replace it .

Are they considered a permanent fix or a band aid to get you rolling again?

  • I'd say band-aid

  • Emergency valve stem
    Heh...

They make two versions, one is the larger emergency type with the wing nut and they also make one intended for more permanent use that needs a wrench to install. Both install quickly, but the emergency one is tool-less.

20 minutes to change on the trail with hand tools? Unless you're doing the starter fluid trick that's probably tough. Half day is certainly conservative unless you include getting off the trail to a tire shop. It's definitely an emergency fix.

Bottle jack, an air gun and OBA make quick work .
Do it at work all the time with small equipment on site .

Sometimes , it does take a little extra time to unseat the bead
