You get 20mpg on (what looks like in pics) 33" tires?!@!@ what gears? 4.56? 4.88?

    --Randall

  • Already got one, a 91 Suzuki Sidekick W/ 80k miles. Just inspected it today, hope to get it tagged tomorrow. For $150 I couldn't pass it up.

Had to put a windshield in it for another $155 for a grand total of $305. :innocent:

  • yellow jeep 35's with 4.56 gears. 15MPG highway 12 city

    black jeep 20MPG average. (2.5L)

looking at cars now. (VW golf/GTI or Scion TC rank high on the list) unless i find my IS300

going to sell the black jeep soon

  • I'll pay the $ to drive what I want when and how I want. Its only $ people... can you put a price on satisfaction?

If I was looking to get good gas milage I would never have bought the Jeep in the first place.

I own a car that gets nearly 30 MPG, but its a fair weather car, so I dont get to drive her all that much.

If you wanna play, you gotta pay.

Good luck to those of you getting motorcycles to save on gas. BE CAREFUL!

DE is a very bad state for riders. The people driving cars & trucks here just dont drive well enough not to kill a lot of bikers every year.

I love motorcycles, but living in this area I will never own one. Too many people I know have been seriously hurt or killed.

  • im thinking about picking up one of the new toyota yaris 44 mpg for 12k new.
i came close to selling my jeep since i get 10mpg avg but ive only had it a year and just got it the way i want it 33" 3.5 lift. i would be a very sad man if i got rid of it only to have gas prices drop back down to 2.00.

Ive always wanted a jeep since my uncle used to drive me around in his cj-5 when i was a kid its one of those life long goals i always had.

  • Beware of those hybrids, at least in the math. Not that I'm opposed to them, but don't buy one to save money because you won't. If you bought an Insight new when the Fed was offering the $3000 tax break you would have to drive 140,000 miles @ $3/g in order to make your first cent profit.

Lets say you have a jeep getting 10mpg.
You want a Yaris that gets 44mpg (I have yet to see one actually produce these numbers, but for sake of arguement.)

You jeep is costing .30 cents per mile @$3/g
The yaris would cost .06 cents per mile.
You'd save .24 cents per mile.
Simple math says you'd need to drive 50,000 miles just to break even in gas alone.
Then there is maintence and repair cost of owning a second vehicle.
Higher Insurance on a second vehicle.
Oh, and lest not forget the interest on a loan if you need one.
Going by stupid numbers, my educated guess tells me you personally would need to travel about 95,000 miles in order to save your first penny in gas.

To break even over the added cost of the new chevy pickup hybrid you'd need to drive over 250,000 miles @ $3/g. It's like driving across town to save a penny per gallon on fill-up - pointless.

  • PS - me and my college just re-calucated based on a 15mpg jeep and you would need to travel at least 143,000 miles before profit and thats IF you don't do ANY maintence to the vehicle.

  • yaris isnt a hybrid, im driving alot and might be getting transferred to norristown pa which is about 1 hour away from my house. if i get it i am going to carry nothing but liability insurance on it. my jeep will be payed off next month and the yaris i'd by out right since there so low.
It will be worth it to me not to put 400 miles a week on my jeep the yaris ill beat to death for the 5 years that everythings covered then get rid of

  • That's cool - I just wanted people to realize the cost associated with making a purchase like this. It's easy to see how you'd think you were saving $200 a month when its actually much, much less...

Uhhh? 20+ for a stock 2500/3500 5.9L cummins. A chip may even get me 22. I may even run it on SVO (Straight Veggie Oil) which is nearly free... If I get nutty, I could refine the SVO into BioDiesel with methanol and lye and also have free soap (yuck).

    --Randall

EDIT - not sure if the new cummins will do straight veggie oil, but I intend to do some research and maybe even buy a used one.

I have an article from Mother Earth News from the early 80's about how university of Iowa or Michigan or something.. did a study with a catapillar 500 motor.. they ran one on 500 gallons of diesel.. and one of 500 gallons of soy oil...
the soy one came back with lower emmisions.. lower wear.. a cleaner engine.. and better fuel economy...
    http://www.motherearthnews.com has some reasources...

Why the HECK didn't they ever do a real diesel wrangler. Even the 2.8CRD in the Liberty doesnt do that well on fuel economy... Imagine if they had released a 4BT3.9 based jeep... 25mpg?

    ?

back in the 50's jeep made for a few years a perkins 5 cyl diesel jeep... if i EVER find one ill buy it in a heart beat... the problem is they were real rare..
diesel just never took off here in the states.. most of the cars we know are available in diesel in other countrys...
i saw a kia 4 cyl turbo diesel suv down in coasta rica..

  • ill trade you the black jeep for a 93 passat wagon VR6 leather interior...

  • well it makes me really think about putting my motorcycle on the road.. but right now im lucky... company vehicle with gas card that sits in my driveway....
so the gas price has not hit me too hard yet.. most of my drivin is for fun... or for errands...

  • Quote from "Quantum73"

I do wish there was a diesel option for the Wranglers, I would have bought it in a heartbeat. I like the power delivery, the gas mileage is just a bonus...

Well....you can always put in the same diesel that Chrysler puts in there Jeep Libby....

I have them bookmarked here someplace....some company makes a kit you can buy to do it.... :innocent:

  • You'll have to wait 5 years before they start hitting the junk yards. You don't want a 1rst year production motor anyway.
