  • you might want to rethink this weekend. I talked to a local and as of this morning the amount of snow and ice make getting up the trail head impossable. all the firewood is buried and frozen to the ground. walking the trail to spot is now dangerious because you cannot see the rocks, crevises, and leg breakers. Tires will not grip ice covered rocks. expected weekend Temps are 0 with wind chill and additional precip friday and Sat dropping the temp even lower. so the Ice will not get a chance to thaw

  • this group has gone many times with snow cover and ice. it just makes it all the more exciting. (and i'm a local and the conditions aren't that bad :bsflag:)

  • I've been up there with 13 inches of snow and an ice crust on top. It was a blast. It made even the easiest of trails difficult. The only one who went wherever he wanted was Allen (1tontj). But even then he had to get a running start.

  • Keep an eye on the road conditions. I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to make this one.

Currently I-81, I-80, and I-78 are still shut down to traffic due to ice conditions.

If I-81 remains closed, the only way to Paragon are back roads. I personally do not feel comfortable towing the Jeep through the Jim Thorpe area with these type of conditions.

Anyone that does plan on going up, please keep an eye on current road conditions as the ice has been a big problem in the Allentown area.

    Thanks

  • I would advice you to cancel this weeks run. As of this morning, I78 has been opened East bound only. I'm not sure about I80 and I81, but it might be a good idea to stay clear of the area to let the road crews do their jobs.

Regardless, I wouldn't want to tow a vehicle in that mess. If you're going it would be a good idea to drive the Jeep up. If the INTERSTATES are that bad, who knows how the BACK ROADS will be!

  • For those who don't know, Paragon's entrance doesn't really get plowed too well. Whenever I go up in the winter time I can't get my truck (2wd) up the hill at the entrance due to the Jeep being towed. The last time I unhooked at the Exxon and left the truck there, driving the Jeep into the park. I'm not sure how crazy the Exxon was about me doing that though.

  • I posted up on the Paragon site to get a local report. I-80 and I-81 are expected to be open Friday afternoon. The park management posted that they have 6" of fresh snow on the trails and the entrance and the parking lot are plowed. They caution that 2wd tow vehicles may have a problem, as Slimer posted. I haven't given up on the ride yet, but I'm not going to fight my way up to Hazleton to do it. Things can change by Sunday so I'm keeping my options open.
