I need a spare

    I need to purchase a spare tire/wheel. I believe that my Jeep has Mickey Thompson Classic II rims. I have been looking at them on the Quadratec website and they seem chrome but mine are more of an aluminum look. Is this just because they are old and lost some of the finish or did M/T offer non-chrome styles in the past?

    I wanted to confirm this was the correct wheel that I need to match what I have.
    Mickey Thompson Classic II Pattern Alloy Wheel
    Bolt Pattern: 5x4.5
    Size: 15x10
    Backspacing: 3 5/8


    That is the correct wheel assuming you have 15x10s and not 15x8s. And yes, new ones look more "chrome" because they are new and not old and faded. I have the same wheels on my TJ and they were new and shiny a year and a half ago, but now they look like crap like yours. Got some new ones sitting in the garage just waiting til after winter to put em on. :wavey:


    Btw, your Jeep looks like it has 15x8s on it. Maybe someone else could confirm that unless you know for a fact that they are 10s.

    I have the same wheels and the polish faded quicker than any wheel I had ever seen. Get a Mothers buff ball for your drill and they will come up like new. Get the small buff ball because it fits inside the holes.

    I was going to try this on Saturday.

    The rim/tire has been ordered! I ended up going to Ron's Discount Tires on Naamans Rd. He was able to do $179.95 for the tire and $149.95 for the rim mounted and balanced out the door. That beats DE Tire for the package by $7.60.



    On a side note I emailed M/T about the discoloration and their customer service also recommended that I use the Mother's buff ball and Mothers aluminum polish which I think I have some at home. I will let you know how it turns out.

    not sure how shipping and mount/balance locally would've played out...but just the cost of the two items would've been quite a bit cheaper. also, if you don't plan on working the spare into tire rotation then maybe an 8" version of the wheel would've helped out? cheaper price and it would've tucked in tighter to your jeep as well.


    Yea I looked into that as an option. But there were three problems. 1. Shipping was like $19 for the rim and $25 for the tire. 2. I would have to lug the wheel / tire to the shop to have it put together. 3. Mounting and balancing was like $20-$25.


    When you take all of that into account it was so close that it was not worth the hassle to do it myself.

    I wondered about that. Wouldn't it end up hitting something on the brakes or something up in the wheel well?

    nope, you'd have been fine for a spare. it would've just looked a little "odd" when bolted to an axle until the normal tire was replaced and that 10" wheel remounted again. the only issues of rubbing like you mentioned would've been if you had a wheel with closer to stock backspacing. no matter - it'll look fine on the jeep!

    napa's polish and alot of elbow greese worked for us on it.


    this was for a beach trip. about 30 min on each wheel the day before.

    I don't know if I have enough energy for that. I'm still nursing this broken ankle back to health. We'll see what I can do Saturday for those of you that'll be at the DeJA meeting can see if I made any improvement.
