Cat Converter

usually doesn't do any good... and just gets you in trouble when it's time for DMV to check your emissions. have you done a tuneup lately? air filter, spark plugs, wires, checked distributor or cap? if you're losing power, you need to find out why.

you think you jeep is losing power? its that hard top i told you it makes a difference lighter jeep means faster and happier jeep. taking your cat out would not give you a noticeable power gain at all, i told you this so many times man!!!!!

Do you think that the cat is clogged up with broken honey combing? If that is true then i would get a new one. Hollowing it out, like said before, will do little for power gains.

Actually, cats don't all glow red if they are have broken up pieces inside. My last ZJ had a cat that went bad and broke up and i didn't know it from looking at it. The only clue i had was a rattle in my exhaust and the engine would die on me if the chunks blocked the passage. Then obviously the exhaust couldn't escape and the cylinders would no longer evacuate exhaust making them unable to fire. I'd be more willing to get you a used cat from my dad's junkyard than encouraging you to hollow it out. New cats are like $100 if i remember correctly.

Sorry Chief. Mine's been hollow for 6 years and passes emissions with flying colors.

i put a strait pipe through my cat after i gutted it (because i thought it was clogged) and i passed emissions too, but i am soon to put another cat on because my jeep smells and backfires aren't fun anymore.

they dont even look under your car at all, they just stick that ramrod thing up your exhaust and tell you too hold it at 2000 rpms for a little then their computer does the rest.

They stick a mirror under mine. The skid plate hides most if it but I guess they can see what they have to. They DO check on older vehicles. On my newer ones I can't recall if they check or not. They may not since newer exhausts last longer and if the exhaust is not obviously modified they may figure it's on there.
