So I've had my YJ for a bit now, and would like to start getting into the whole off-roading thing. Obviously, this is all new to me though, so could someone give me an idea of what all I'd have to do to be able to start doing this. Basically I need something along the lines of a shopping list, what I need to get/do first, what is the minimum I need to get to be able to go on a run, etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.
The minimum: Front and rear tow points, full size spare, tow strap with no hooks....that should cover it.
Most people go with a 4" lift and maybe 1" body lift. 33" tires will probably get you anywhere you want to go to start. Of course, these modifications generally entail additional stuff that costs even more. Before you know it you're hooked and looking at dumping a few grand into the Heep making it impractacle for a daily driver.
Thiis is why it is generally recommended to try the trails stock first. Your Jeep is capable of going off road and doing fairly well. You need to feel yourself out to determine exactly HOW difficult you want to go. This is also a good way to watch everyone elses rig perform. You'll gain a feeling for what works, what doesn't work, and not to mention what you NEED as opposed to what you WANT. That alone is important.

It was pricey for me but I needed to buy a bumper to mount a 35" tire and a 35" tire + wheel. The little stuff is much cheaper. Stock Jeeps can go a long way! My first Jeep was a stocker and I did a lot with it. Join the group at one of the events at RC and do the Green/Blue trails and if there is something that you don't want to do go around.
