Steering Gear Box

  • Trying find out if any one has a steering gear box that will fit a 2005 Wrangler Unlimited that they would be willing to part with. I have about 2 1/2 inches of play with the steering before the wheels start to move and it has started leaking from were the pitman arm goes. I have checked to make sure everything on the suspension is tight. Our budget is tight and I can't see paying what they are asking when I search for it on the web and the place I can find it for at a decent price is out of stock.

  • Try rebuilding it..... From what I understand its rather easy.....

Anytime you take your 20+ year old jeep apart plan on fixing more them you intended.

  • Not really. There are loose ball bearings in there and a bunch of seals and parts to rehab. Also if any of the parts are out of tolerance you will have to find and relaplace them. Try rockauto for a relacement or your local junk yard.

  • Isn't a Durango steering box an upgrade for a TJ? I think someone was selling one on here.

  • Went through this a couple years ago... Your best bet is to locate a used box. I found mine on the Jeepforum classifieds, paid like $250 shipped for a used box. Must be '03 to '06 due to the mercedes/ ZF gear box change from the previous saginaw models. The durango swap only works for the Saginaw equiped models due to Bolt hole differences in the frame. There is no rebuild kit available for the ZF Gear as far as I know..
Try this guy, Might have some luck..

  • I have a box out of my 2006 TJ. It only has about 20,000 miles on it. I can throw the shaft in as well. $100

Sounds good to me Billy. Now to figure out how we can do the swap.
