i just replaced the fuel pump on my 89 xj.....needless to say it didnt work. a friend said i could have put the wires on backwards making it pump out of the lines and into the tank....told me to switch them around to reverse polarity. im skeptical but open minded about this...anybody have any info? Wouldn't putting the positive onto the negative terminal and vice versa cause a short in the pump? help?

XJ FUEL PUMP ISSUES.... :/

I believe they can be wired up backwards. I think it just spins the motor the other direction. The posts should be labeled, assuming an inline pump.
Another thing to check is that you didnt plumb it backwards. I've done that...

yeah. the posts aren't labeled (stupid airtek
) i was figuring they would be the same as the old pump. but then again there was abunch of jerry rigging that went into getting it onto the housing that sits in the tank. the plumbing is right...suprisingly i'm pretty good at that just thought id give a fourm a shot and see others input on it before i broke my back hunched under it for the next 4 hours lol. -
Interesting, mine (airtex also) were labeled. Studs or spade terminals? Pump making any noise?
-
yeah it was working when it was the wrong way and they are spade i believe...the pump was running about 10x louder the first time i did it...upon pulling it back out and reversing the wires it quieted down to almost nothing and started on third crank after i primed it 4 or 5 times...problem solved! future note water pumps CAN be wired backwards and piss you off for about 3 hours and a nights sleep. thanks for the input

Yeah a lot of the simple motors or pumps like that can run in reverse by switching the wiring. Glad you got it straightened out!
