tj rear sway bar

    Has anyone permanently removed the rear sawaybar from their TJ and if so how bad has it altered on road performance. A couple of weeks ago my jeep started making a creaking noise from the rear when getting in and out of it and when starting from a dead stop. The swaybar bushing were popped almost all the way out of the sway bar. I took everything apart and reseated the bushings, the next trip to Rausch they popped out again. I'm trying to decide whether to just lose it all together or to buy new poly bushing and see of they stay in place

    You may have tweaked something such as the sway bar mounts but from your description I'd suspect that the bushings are bad and replace them first. After that you can disconnect the sway bars and drive it around town for a bit to see if you like it or not.

    When you went to RC, did you disco the sway bars while wheeling? If not, I'd say that may be the cause of the bushings unseating. Your suspension is trying to flex on the obstacles and the sway bars fighting against that flex causing the bushings to wear prematurely or causing worn bushings to wear further. Stop riding her rough and putting her up wet and dirty! You're rubbing her underparts raw!! Be a gentleman and clean her up after you're done abusing her. :innocent:

    U need them for the street. Probably need longer ones as they are your limiting straps. Becareful though because once they are longer then your shocks will now be the limiters.

    Thanks Aaron and Quadna, sounds like the previous owner who lifted the jeep did not address the rear sway bar situation. I'll assume that I will need to pick up an extended rear sway bar links ?
    I am not sure how long the stock ones are but what is on there now is at least 12" long

    Lemme look when I get home...I'm pretty sure I had a set of extended ones kicking around the garage.


    If not I've always had good luck with a section of all-thread, 2 locknuts, and 2 'male' heims. Makes a nice set of 'adjustable' links for the rear.

    I'm pretty sure I have extended ones on there, it'll probably buy some new bushing and see hat happens, I read that stock links are 7" center to center mine are much longer than that

    U are hitting the limits of your short arm suspension. As im sure u know. U may want to just fix the bushings and get limit straps. Kind of like putting a band aid on it for now but a pretty cheap fi to prevent the axle extending too far.

    Ok, short of removing rear sway bar to physically measure it, does anyone know of any markings that may give away its size? There are apparently several different diameters used. 13mm, 16mm and 30mm .

    Bob are you trying to find out the diameter of the sway bar? If you are use a open end wrench to see what size it is. :up:

    That's what I was going to do, wasn't sure how accurate the measurement needs to be for the mew bushing. Thanks Neil

    Try and fit that 13mm wrench and if it's too small you'll know it's the 16mm and if it's way too small you can bet it's the 30mm bar! I'm sure I'm just flapping my gums here. Wonder why they made 2 so close and size and then decided to go Bubba size on another?

    Ok, bought a kit today, the two new bushing and brackets that mount to the axle were perfect, however the bushing for the links are wrong (this is a swapped in axle, the straight bushing could be right) the links I have require hour glass shaped bushing, which mine are completely shot, am I better off trying to find a set of links to accept the straight bushing, or try to find hour glass bushing that fit the links that I have????
