Has anyone ever heard of running without an outer front axle shaft to get off the trail (or home) after breaking a u joint. Unless I'm missing something, doesn't the bearing assembly carry the load and hold the wheel on? No, I'm not drunk ....Yet!
getting home

If the axle has a unit bearing you wont make it far before it separates. I suppose you might get lucky but I wouldnt count on it. Need a stub shaft to get off the trail and back home.

This happened at 3 MPH and scared me. I couldn't imagine what would happen at 50 MPH. :o
I thought I broke an inner shaft so I kept driving it. The unit bearing separating told me it was a stub.

Don't drive without outers.

If you have an old stub shaft you can just pull the inner, stuff a rag in the hole and run the stub shaft home. Def don't run without a stub shaft though.
-
Yup. I broke mine a couple years back and dident have a spare. Got by for two weeks like that. Ussually when the u-joint breaks you end up with enough of a seperated stub shaft to put back in.

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess I need to replenish my supply. Are the TJ u joints a lot stronger?
-
If the yj u-joints are the smaller ones like in some of the xj's than yes. I would just hit the junkyard and grab some xj shafts. As long as you get the bigger joint shafts your all set and there plentifull in the yards. I can ussualy grab them for $35 a peice if I can get the hub off. $50 if I cant.

The best u-joint for the TJ style axles is the Spicer 5-760X.
No grease fitting, but very well sealed and as strong as a traditional u-joint comes.
-
Randy the only shaft u can use on the passenger side is the 95 yj shaft unless u go with one piece shaft.
-
I would imagine that all the after market alloy shafts would have the larger u joint, if I should go that way which would also involve a one piece axle on the passenger side.
-
Not sure if they sell a chromo disco inner shaft. Just have not looked in a while. U may have go with a one piece shaft to upgrade.
