Secure web browsers

  • Anybody here running a "secure" web browser? I've been looking into replacing Chrome with something a little less big-brother-ish. HTTPS Anywhere is a good plugin to start with, but trying to sort out the pros and cons of something like Upic vs Brave vs Tor. I figured some folks like @Stafford, @clendaniel or @quadna might have some input?

Gone- 2012 JK Rubicon with stuff. Long gone- Long-arm 2001 Cherokee with stuff.

  • I used HTTPS Anywhere in the past but more sites are defaulting to HTTPS and I think I had some problem with it so I uninstalled it. I use Ghostery today for blocking a lot of ad/tracking bs. I don't know if I trust Tor, exit nodes can be/have been compromised and you don't know who is running them plus the FBI has known exploits: https://it.slashdot.org/story/…because-national-security

I guess the question is...what are you trying to protect against?

I guess limit the data mining from my web activity. I already use AdBlock Plus to hide some of the junk ads (I turn them on for certain sites), but the data collecting is a little annoying. It's not that I have anything crazy to hide, it's more of the principle for now. I know that I'd need to change DNS servers and go through a VPN to get better privacy, but... baby steps?

  • I'd start with ghostery, abp, http anywhere, fb purity, disable tracking in the browser if it's not already set (not that any sites respect that), use private mode whenever possible and see how that feels. I use PIA when I need a vpn.

You can also opt out of some tracking here but it's of questionable value

In reality, and I hate to admit this, the only way to really stop it is to disconnect.

  • If you want to go completely secure I would recommend downloading and installing PRO XPN. "PRO XPN is a personal VPN that provides you safety and privacy while using the Internet." basically when downloaded and turned on it automatically reroutes your IP to another country without you as the user having to change any settings on your PC. Its very simple to use and very secure.

  • Amusingly I was just telling Jen about this type thing last night after one of her students was arrested for the whole clown/bomb thing at Smyrna High the other day.

I don't really hide much...don't really have the need. That being said I primarily use chrome w/ some addons (adblock, etc) and many times traffic is via vpn or ghetto-d vpn (proxy over ssh tunnel)
