Drum brakes. What are these?

  • Can someone please tell me what these two round washer looking things are and the two horseshoe looking things also.
I am in the middle of putting things back together and I don't see where the old ones are. The brake shoes were locked up inside the drum so they didn't come off so great so I don't have a good side to really go off of for installation

  • The washer looking things are a form of lock washer. They hold the horse shoe looking things in place by compressing a bit when inserting the horse shoe clips.

  • The horse shoe looking things hold the ebrake lever on to the shoe, if I recall correctly.

So they are not "optional that model".

  • Take one side apart at a time and take note where and how the springs connect, how the cable is run, and what not. Also, there is a Left and Right side to the parts so look for an L it an R

  • go here u can see the horseshoe on the yj brake assembly. It holds the brake lever onto the secondary shoe. Not dure if its used on a tj.

  • I guess I got them together right. I still have to adjust and bleed them. It got too dark and I was a little fed up. It took me like 5hrs to do the back brakes. I am anal so I took all the parts I had to reuse and cleaned them on wire wheel and painted the backing plate and parts before reassembling everything.

  • I do not miss drum brakes! I did a disc brake conversion on my XJ instead of replacing a bad wheel cylinder. Took a weekend to finish, but it was worth it to me. :)

  • I used to do drum brakes a couple times a week but they were on tri axle dump trucks. This was my first time on a passenger vehicle. Def a learning experience.

  • yes what u had assembled on the ground was correct the park lever is what pulls the e-brake cable and thats what that clip and washer retain.

It takes me about an hour a side now but u have to keep doing them or u forget all the little tricks that help u save time.
