2024 Coastal Clean Up - Cape Henlopen Navy September 14th, 2024 @ 9am

  • Date & Time: Saturday, September 14 at 9:00am – 12:00pm

Your site: Cape Henlopen State Park - Navy Crossing

Please be sure to check in with them when you arrive.

On the day of the event, dress comfortably and appropriate for the weather, and bring water. Due to shortened supplies and to reduce waste, it is preferred that you bring your own gloves. However, gloves will be provided to those who need them. We also recommend bringing a 5-gallon bucket to collect trash so we can reduce the amount of trash bags we send to the landfill. After you empty the buckets on-site, you may take them back home with you.

    .

    Directions:

Meet up Area is Main Beach parking area to the left of the bathhouse.

    Data reporting:

In order to reduce the amount of paper used and waste generated, DNREC has developed a data reporting app in lieu of the cardstock data card. If you wish to use the app, you may access it here: de/gov/coastalcleanup However, if you do not have a strong cellular signal at your site or prefer to use the cardstock data card for your group, one will be provided.

    Cancelation information:

The Coastal Cleanup will go on, rain or shine unless lightning or severe storm conditions exist. If cancelled, please feel free to do your own cleanup on another better weather day and use the Coastal Cleanup Website to submit your data.

Please visit the Coastal Cleanup Website at:

    https://dnrec.alpha.delaware.gov/coastal-cleanup/

    Concerning Youth Volunteers:

All youth under the age of 18 must have parental consent to participate in the event.

Leaders of groups have the responsibility to obtain and keep on hand parental consent forms for youth under the age of 18. You will not need to submit these forms at the event. Youth volunteers 15 years of age and under must also be accompanied by a responsible adult. Groups are responsible to ensure proper supervision of the youth members of your group.

    Recycling:

As you pick up trash at your designated site, keep in mind things like bottle caps, plastic sand buckets, plastic straws and coffee cup lids are not recyclable and must never be placed in your curbside recycling carts. Unfortunately, almost every plastic item you will collect on the beach must be placed in the trash. Items that are normally recyclable may be too degraded and/or too contaminated to be recycled. (Tires will be excepted for recycling for this clean up.) If you want to recycle glass bottles and metal cans you find during your cleanup efforts, feel free to bring your own container to collect them in and recycle them at home. Don’t forget, bring your own gloves and a bucket to help reduce waste!

Whether at home, school or work, always refer to the Recycling in Delaware Flyer to properly dispose of items. If you are unsure whether an item can be recycled, check out our new on-line search tool: Recyclopedia! It can be found at: http://de.gov/recycling.

Contamination is a big problem at our Delaware recycling facility. One item in particular causes major disruptions to the recycling process: Plastic Bags. Plastic bags wrap around the equipment throughout the facility. The only way to rid the machines of these bags is to shut down the entire facility and have workers climb into the machines to manually cut out and untangle the bags. Not only is this time consuming and costly, but it is also dangerous. Keep your recyclables loose in your curbside recycling cart or dumpster. And never place plastic bags in your recycling cart.

Nobody belongs anywhere, nobody exists on purpose, everybody's going to die. Have a beer.
