The steering is the YJ has gotten a little sketchy. Every 1/4 turn or so the steering gets real tight, then goes back to normal, then tight again.
Fluid is full, no air. I have been told that it may be the box.
Suggestions?
And if you have the parts I need let me know.
It almost sounds as if something is bent. But I'm going to guess the bearing in the bottom of the steering column is bad, or the U-joint at the top of the lower shaft is worn.
I'd also check that your steering box is not fubarred or out of alignment from taking a hit while off roading.
the box dosent leak and everything is aligned. Any quick ways to check the ujoints?
It's not too hard to remove the lower shaft. That might be the best way to isolate the problem. If you remove the lower shaft, the steering column will be isolated. If you still have the problem you know it's in the column. If not, then the problem is elsewhere. While you have the lower shaft removed check the u-joint. If it seems fine then the problem would be in the lower box, or further down.
Seams I am saying this a lot lately. I guess because I had a YJ and then a CJ with bad front axle ujoints.

I ruled front axle u-joints out because of the how he said it was acting. But they are easy enough to check. I thought YJ front axles were always spinning. Since they are always spinning their shouldn't be a "tight" spot in turns. If you have front locking hubs you could simply put your hubs into 4WD (keep the t-case in 2WD) and take if for a spin. If the problem goes away then it's in the front axles.
