I haven't thought about the slant six in a long time. I had two cars with that engine. 73 Plymouth duster was my first car in high school. Then a Volare we used for some parts.

Glad it worked out. I'm about to order a body lift and I was wondering if there was anything specific that lead you to choose the one from JKS?

I just did both front axle joints with basic tools and instructions from YouTube and the forum here. It's time consuming but I didn't find it overly difficult.
-
Replaced another u joint. Without using the press. Much quicker and easier with a bfh.

Bummer. There's a guy here that's been trying to sell a like-new pair of BD mml for some time.
Actually, I bought that one last week. [emoji16] -
Ok. So how do you determine what's the right size?
I just got new ones and they look too long.

After that I think I'm good until something else breaks.
Or until my memory catches up with me...
Still have to install new bump stops and the storage posts for the discos.

Alright. I went at the u joint again this weekend and was able to get one replaced. Didn't have time to do both, but having gotten through the first one the next one won't take long. I did end up using the press. Put the press in the vice and everything went pretty smoothly.
So what's next? Every time I complete one thing three others seem to need attention.
I'm going to replace the other front axle u joint, just as a precaution. The one I did today was definitely showing some wear.
Then I have some driveline vibes to address. I picked up a motor mount lift from a club member (Thanks again Curtis) And a 1in. Body lift is on the way. That should take care of the vibes I hope.
After that I think I'm good until something else breaks.

I'll take at least one of the tires.
I've even got one decent 31 if you need a spare. -
I have the mirror movers that mount to the windshield hinges.

I just did the reverse of what you're talking about ( Where were you two months ago!!! We could have just switched!!! [emoji16] ) And I would suggest changing the shocks. I went from 31 to 33 by adding the spacers someone mentioned. I used shocks with a similar feel to stock and ride quality is fine.

2004 TJ 5-speed, so does that make it a NV3550?
I've owned it since 30k miles, and it's always made a little rattle, but it's NOTICEABLY worse now... definitely sounds like marbles in the bell housingAre you sure about where the sound is coming from? Cause that's exactly the noise my catalytic converter makes. Been going on for awhile. I was convinced it was the clutch it throw out at first till I climes under for a good check.

Welcome to the group! It may be your first, likely won't be the last!

The rust on the shaft is much worse than I was thinking. Or is that more or less normal for a jeep this age?
-
Took about 30 minutes and several tries but I got it. Then I see this:

Ok. So I got to work on this today. Been following this write up: http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/d30/axle-2.htm.
And I'm stuck. Hub won't come off the steering knuckle. Is there some magic trick I'm missing? Or do I just need a bigger hammer to knock it loose?

I've watched that one and a few others. Getting them out seems ok. Getting everything back together without a press seems more challenging.
