Ok so my AC compressor is grinding really bad.
I have a new one but do not have the knowledge or equipment needed to swap it out.
Is there anything I can temporarily do to possibly lessen the noise until I figure out how to get it fixed?
I don't even have AC as an option.
Called pep boys out of desperation and they quoted me at $450.

So your Jeep has an AC compressor but the AC system is not complete or functional? Why do you have a new one then? Unplug the wiring going to it and that should disable the clutch on it and it should not spin. When does it make noise, when you turn AC on and/or when you turn the defroster on?
-
It makes the noise the entire time the engine is on.
I don't think I have AC. There is no AC button on my console.
I'm guessing the bearings in the pulley are shot. It's an awful noise. -
Just get a different belt and bypass the compressor
-
If you have no AC then how is your AC compressor grinding?
It could be your fan clutch, idler pulley, alternator, steering pump or water pump I suppose. But with no AC is probably not your AC compressor.

Just get a different belt and bypass the compressorThis is your best option. As far as a repair if you swap the compressor you will have to deal with discharging the system, ideally replace the drier and venturi (cheap), pull a vacuum, and recharge. Or you can just replace the bearing in the clutch. You should be able to get the clutch on and off with a simple puller setup but you will probably have to use a press to remove/install the new bearing. Or since you have another compressor pull that clutch and install it on yours. It will prevent you from opening the whole system up.

Ok.
Looks like I DO have AC.
So it's definitely my AC compressor.Guess I'm just gonna have to take it somewhere and deal with the price.
No other choice really. -

No other choice really.Look up an Alternate belt routing that skips the AC compressor. You will need a shorter belt but you won't have the noise anymore.
EDIT: Just looked it up myself. You probably need an AC bypass pulley if you want to remove the compressor. Wranglers can install a different belt and skip the AP compressor. Silly XJ's.

You can get a bypass pulley from Napa or http://www.autozone.com/1/cate…compressor-bypass-pulleys and use the belt you have. Cheaper than fixing the ac compressor right now.
-
You can replace the bearing in the clutch or even the entire clutch assembly without opening the a/c system. There is a special puller of course but you can rent one. The bearing often goes bad before the compressor.

Oops, I see shadyluke already covered that.

Thanks a lot everyone.
Replaced the whole thing, running great again. -
