HP44 Knuckle removal

  • OK I got started with the knuckle removal
and so far the axle is winning.

I had 2 cheap impact sockets. and stripped one and cracked the other.

So tomorrow I go to get better tools like a proper impact socket
    and snap ring pliers.

I am taking pics but I am not sure if our gallery is working.

  • let me know if you need any advice....freshened up the 44 in my RC a few yrs ago....Also, I have the collar socket for the upper ball joint if you need to borrow that.

  • OK A new day and a new $5 impact socket

Things went much better this morning!

    Got the old wheel off

    Removed the old brakes

Pulled the dust cap (Good shot of the snap ring I need to remove)

    Test fitted the hummer rim

Here you can see the flat top knuckle and note the steering arm is inside the rim. This is why you need to run 2" spacer with this wheel.

  • Here is an update from this afternoon

Internal parts Removed (Thanks to Tony for the use of nut removal tool.)

    Rotor removed

Hub puller (Thanks again to Tony for the slide hammer)
    Three licks and it off

Down to the knuckle (Looks like I’ll be needing new ball joints)

Long side Axle shaft. The outer is only 19 spline same as a ½ ton

The reason the spindle came off easy. It was beat off at least once before
You can see the hammer marks on the non bearing surface.

    Thanks Tony,
I don't think it is hurt they just beat on it to get it off.

  • dont know but I have a 3/4 drive set over here just coem get them when you like I also have a adapter to go from 1/2 to 3/4 for the gun

I may need that socket but I'll try to do it without it first.

I hear i can make one out of a spark plug socket also.

    thanks for the offer

  • Got the nuts off the ball joints but the kuuckle is still hung up in the inner C

Worked on the drivers side tonight it was a little harder More rust the brake calaper is shot, the rotor is gouged and the brake shield has rusted and broke away.

Took about 10 hits with the slap hammer to get the spindal free

Looks like lots of work

  • I used a pitman are puller on the upper ball joint which i tightned down and then gave the lower joint a shot with then fork. That worked for me.

    Good luck

  • best way I've found to get the spindle off is to use one of these

    with one of these

hit back behind the bolt flange, there are even little spots in the cast to get you started. About 10 good hits should start to move it. Don't worry you won't hurt anything - HIT IT!

  • I gor the spindle off with no problems I had the correct tool

I need to remove the outer knuckle
I read another story about using a pitman arm puller and then a big hammer

  • Bought a new tool

I went to Sears and picked up a pickle fork set
It has three sizes of forks and two handles. One to hit with a hammer the other for use with an air hammer.

Got to put it to the test tonight :yevil:

I used a 2 pound sledge and popped the pasengers side knuckle off

Glad that side is done

  • That a D44 HD? I still have that 44HD and ball joints. I have to get it gone, as my mom is selling her place. I am loosing my storage space. :(

If you just need parts off it thats cool too. I want to limit the stuff that has to go to a storage unit.

If it came apart w/ a slap hammer it wasn't stuck.

No the spindal wasent stuck the outer knuckle didn't want to come loose.
but the pickle fork took care of that.

    Rob,
I'll send you a PM on that axle.
