Ok, got the brake issue resolved, so the Jeep stops, now I'm having a starting issue.

Got a used red top a few months back. Jeeps been running great with it. The other day, when heading to Smyrna, it would barely turn over. Keeping the key turned, it would try, but was slow turning. Would eventually build up and start and run fine. But if I shut it down, same thing happened. Few days later, trying it again, not even a click at first. Did eventually start though. I was thinking it was the starter, but I guess my question is, if just the starter is bad, would that cause things like a dead battery? Like all the radio stations being erased and such? If it's just a starter, no big deal I can do that. Just wanted to see if anyone had any other thoughts before I spent the money on it.

Info for the C&D Canal Clean Up on Saturday, Sept. 30th

Meeting Time: 9am (please try not to be too late if you're going to be there at the start. We'll need to see how many we have, and possibly get broken up into groups.

Meeting Place: Starting from 896, take a RIGHT if you're coming up 896 North and have just crossed the bridge, OR make a LEFT if you're heading South down 896 and just passed Lums Pond entrance, ONTO Red Lion Road (Rt. 71 North). Pass Chesapeake City Rd, and make the next right onto Old Summit Road and you'll see the group gathered there, at the end of the road. From there we'll head to the location where we will be piling the trash to be picked up later by the Project Office. If you're inclined to use Google Earth, or have a GPS, here's the coordinates: 39 degrees 32'38.00"N 75 degrees 43'33.71"W)

Safety Info/ What to Wear: Kids are welcome, but parents are responsible for them. If you can't keep an eye on your child, don't bring them. There is often hazardous (not in a chemical way, but it's not out of the question) and dangerous materials around (broken glass, sharp metal, etc.). Gloves, preferably leather, will be required, as well as good boots or thick soled shoes. Long pants and sleeves are recommended, and please dress for the weather.

What to Bring: I have a few, very few, of the "pointy sticks" left, but I'll bring what I have to pick up trash. If you have one from a previous clean up, bring it. Joe I believe is bringing bags. Beverages are your responsibility, and I'm checking with the Board to see if the club will be providing a pizza lunch. If so, we'll probably eat around 1pm or so, and we'll meet at the drop off area for that. Bring what you need for drinks, snacks, etc for yourself and anyone with you.

Miscellaneous:In the past, winches have come in handy. I don't know for sure we'll need one, but anyone bringing a Jeep or vehicle with it should have the necessary items to work the winch if needed. If you have a trailer or a truck to bring, that would be better than your Jeep for hauling material back to the drop off site. If we have enough people, we'll more than likely break into 2 groups. One working closer to the drop off site, and the 2nd (preferably more trucks and trailers) will be going a few miles down into MD to an area we scouted out there. If the group is small, we can probably do one area, break for lunch, then head down to the other area.

Also, CB's in the vehicles will be helpful with coordinating. If anyone has some 2-way radios or FSR radios they'd be helpful as well.

Any questions, PM me (wanderlust), or send an email to me at pemjr@comcast.net, or post here. There IS a sign up post in the sign up area (here's a shortcut ;D - http://www.delawareja.com/foru…11475.msg102370#msg102370 ), so please post if you are attending, even if you've already said you were please, so we have an approximate count.

    Thanks
    Paul

quadna drove up in the am. I had the Jeep on stands and the passenger side tire off. You could still feel it rubbing when you rotated the tire. Chris said it must have gotten very hot seeing the color the rotor had become. He had a set of calipers and rotors with him, so we just replaced both on both side. The rotors were a bit stubborn coming off, but eventually did. I don't know that we ever diagnosed exactly what caused it, but it seemed like the caliper had frozen for some reason. With new calipers and rotors on, Chris bled the lines and we test drove it. Seemed fine.

 HUGE thanks to Chris for not only driving all the way up to help out, but for bringing the parts I needed as well!

And, as a bonus, Chris showed me how to adjust my parking brake, which hasn't worked for about 2 years or so.

    Thanks Chris!

    Chris, you rock!

We'll be home all day, yard sale from 8-3, but Selena will be home too. We just have to keep an eye on Adyson while all that's going on. I have to leave at 3:30 or so to take Adyson to a party, but before that could definitely work. I think I have some fluid there, I'll check. If not, I'll get some beforehand.

    Thanks!

Matt, if it's on your way and you have the time, that'd be great. Chris may be bringing me some parts Saturday morning sometime, but I'm not sure if he'll have time to actually look at it. I'll try and have it up in the air before anyone can stop by though. I'll PM you my address and directions, thanks.

    Matty

Thanks for the info. If you have time and are willing on Saturday, feel free to stop by. We don't have any plans that I know of, other than the yard sale in the morning. I'll be watching my daughter the rest of the day. I have not driven it again since Sunday, so I don't know if it's returned to normal. I did stop once on the way back home after it was smoking and let it cool down a bit. It did feel a little bit more free after that, but only for a few minutes, then it got back to feeling locked up.

I have a line on some parts, but I need to see what the problem is first to see what I need, and then it might take me awhile to get the parts. But I can wait for a reduced price!

Let me know, and I can send you directions to my place if you have the time. Much appreciated.

    Paul

Thanks guys for the advice and offers to help. I'll certainly take up any offers to stop by and have a look at it. Unfortunately, I have to work until 8 tonight, so that's probably out. And it's going to rain I think today, tomorrow and Friday. If anyone's available at all this weekend, that would be great. If it's Saturday 8-3, I'll throw in our yard sale for FREE! That means, whatever doesn't sell, if you stop by, you can take it with you!

I'll try and get the Jeep jacked up and have a look at it as soon as possible though.

As some of you already know, I had a brake issue with my TJ on the way to the meeting. I was able to get it back home, but now I have to diagnose and fix the problem. As with too many other things, I know next to nothing about brakes. I'm hoping someone local could stop by and look at it with me and/or help me fix it. I'm looking at it as a good learning opportunity.

Here's what happened. I drove it the night before and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. As I left for the meeting, the front right felt sluggish, almost like the tire was very low on air. I even stopped to check the tire on the way there, but it was fine. A bit further, as I stopped at a light, the Jeep pulled hard to the left. At the light, I could definitely smell something wasn't right, and noticed smoke coming from the front right corner. I pulled off the road and saw the smoke coming from the rotor. I had to push it to get home, like the brakes were partially on all the time. All I've had time to do so far is look under there to see if the brake line was crimped or anything, but it seems fine. No leaking fluid that I noticed either.

Any ideas what it could be? Frozen caliper as some suggested?

Anyone up north have some time to take a look at it with me? Any help would be much appreciated.

    paul

Bags will be good Joe, we just have to remember to keep any recycleable metal seperate. We'll pile that up, and have a seperate pile of bagged and loose trash the C&D office will pickup. I think we'll be mostly on the north side of the canal. Titan, you sound like you were in the right area, but we'll go down past the training area, into MD, there's some stuff there as well. If we finish, we can see what else we can find. People are free to come and go as they please, although getting there at the start may make it easier to find us.

Josh, PM me your cell # for Sunday and we'll work out a time.

    Paul

    Josh
Dave and I started at the entrance under St. George's bridge on the north side, and rode towards, and into MD. Most the upper level trails, not down by the canal. there were a few spots that needed some help. Spots farther away will need to have anything found hauled back to the one central location where we'll be piling stuff. Maybe we can meet down there before the 30th and I'll show you where we went, and we can see what else we can find.

Josh- it's normally a morning thing, meeting about 9am or so to get started. In the past it's gone to anywhere from 3 to 5 pm, all depends on how much we find to clean up.

Titan- many of our members will have their pick-ups and such at the event, so I certainly have no problem with anyone who is willing to help out showing up. The help would be much appreciated. It's all about giving something back, and there is often a lot of crap down there as you saw. Not sure what areas you were in, but I'd be happy to have you and your friends pitch in. Thanks! Shoot me a PM on here, or an email to pemjr@comcast.net if you have any questions.

Info as far as where we'll meet, times, required stuff other than mentioned in this thread already, etc. will be posted soon.

    Paul

Once again we are working with the C&D Project Office in Cheasapeake City to coordinate a clean up of the access roads in the C&D Canal area. Dave from the Project Office and I scouted out an area to work on. There's not a ton of stuff, but there are some big piles, and we always find more than I see initially anyway. See latest post at end for specific directions. We'll meet there (more specific directions to come) at 9am on that Saturday morning, break into 2 groups, and hit 2 different areas, one in MD. Along with people to help gather trash, we'll need small trailers to haul stuff, pick ups, etc.

More info to come later, just wanted to get this on people's calendars. This will be added to the calendar and sign up forum shortly.

Please note: as always, kids are welcome, but parents will want to keep a close eye on them. There can be broken glass, sharp metal edges, etc that can be dangerous. Long pants, long sleeves, boots and gloves are required to help clean up.

Also, we will not have a roll-off this year. We have an area designated to make 2 seperate piles. One for recycleable metal, and one for everything else. So we'll need to seperate trash as we bring it to the drop off area.

Any questions right now, please post and I'll do my best to answer. I'm checking to see if the club will once again provide a pizza lunch, but beverages are your own responsibility.

    Stay tuned....

The circle in town is easy. Just pay attention to the signs, it's all marked. Once out of town it's all cow and rusted cars in the yard for awhile, then you'll see signs for Geo. Washington Nat'l Forest. Just keep going....just keep going. You'll know when you've started up the mountain, especially if you're driving a manual. Once you come down, and it levels out, just keep a sign out for the, uh, sign as DrJ said. It's on the right. Doesn't specifically say Brandywine "Campground" on it, but if I remember correctly it says Brandywine something. The campground entrance is directly on the left at that sign.

John might also be able to look at your CB for you. He's old too, so he may know how it works. John's all about being helpful this week!

I'm no expert, but I"d be happy to take a look at it if you want to drive over to Newark. Call my cell, 388-5888 and I can give you directions. I do not have a SWR meter, but you can check with DrJ and see if he's bringing the club one to GWNF.
