A 19-year-old Wilmington man drowned while swimming on an unguarded beach off Herring Point in Cape Henlopen State Park, officials reported today.
The victim has been identified as Robert Wiercyski.
His body has been turned over to the state Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy, said Michael Globetti, a spokesman for the state Department of Natural Resources and Environment Control.
He said Wiercyski was swimming in the surf Saturday at a beach that is favored by surf fishermen and went under.
Globetti said Wiercyski was under water for about 10 minutes before park rangers pulled him ashore and tried to resuscitate him.
Wiercyski was rushed to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by emergency room doctors.
