they're actually pretty strong. sure, nothing like a 3/8" steel plate welded to 1/2" ring, but they're stronger than stock.

Ummm...yes, it does.
FWIW the hinge is in the center due to the curvature of the windshield frame...the 'hinges' where most SWB's have theirs are simply brackets to hold the frame upright.
