YJ Steering issues

  • I got a slight issue with my steering. It is the kind of issue that is only noticeable if you drive it every day and can feel something diffrent.
It is a little slower returning to center than it once was and I can "feel" a slight catch when I turn the wheel.

A mechanic friend at work told me this is most likely the steering box getting dry or going bad.

I was looking at possible upgrades to the Yj box and the internet search brought up a few. Most popular is the 98 99 Dodge Durango box upgrade.

Anyone here have experience with a steering box upgrade?

  • i believe that Ed (the mistaken) did this not too long ago.

you might want to contact him and see how it is working out.

  • dumb question

The Durango box has a 3 bolt pattern

I'm at work so would someone run out and see if the Yj box is also 3 bolt

    The Tj is three bolt
I have heard the Yj mite be 4 bolt.

  • I thought TJs use the Durango box. I wonder if the YJ used the same (or similar) box as a CJ. If the bolt up is the same I'd suggest using a J10 or J20 box.

Make Your Own Steering Box Brace

I helped a friend fab one by taking a Small Block Chevy
connecting rod (large journal type found on '69 or newer
SBC's) and cutting the piston pin part off and welding a
square tube to the rod with a plate welded to the other end
of the rod to bolt to the opposite frame rail. The large
journal will bolt around the steering box casting at the
output shaft. Make sure you leave the bearing shells out,
and it fits like it was made for it. You can get an
unservicable rod from anyplace that rebuilds SBCs and the
square tube and plate we sourced from a steel salvage yard.
Cost of brace... less than $10!

Way stronger than the commercial ones, too.

  • You'll want to get a good brace then. Mine snapped when the stock CJ steering box bracket broke. I was on a back road trying to hold on before I realized THAT happened. It was a "spirited ride" on a windy road.

  • A good replacement box for the yj is either an Astro van box,,,just about direct bolt up,,,,or ford ranger with a little mod.
the box to lok for in the junk yard would be GM800 Box with a reversed throw
