Nahh.. I used to seal it up with that brown non hardening cord caulking from the inside. after in was installed. Never gave me any trouble.
The gaskets aren't expensive and it is the easiest way to do it if you intend to take the top off seasonally or whatever.
I would use one just for piece of mind and not to make scratches or extra vibration noise, every top ive seen has one
You can buy cap tape at any auto parts store. It will work too
I ran my hard top with out the gasket on 2 of my CJ's and with my glass body. The only possabile problem was on the glass tub. Every time it rained the back floor and wheel well tops got wet. I dont know if it was from the top or the rollbar kickers(the bolt holes were never sealed). I never could pin it down. Never had a problem on the steel. Just put all the bolts back in. And yes I changed my tops every season.
