U joint snapped

    My u joint snapped the inner axle shaft is fine but the outer axle stub is torqued. My question is can I just stuff a rag in the axle shaft and reinstall the stub until I find a new one?

    Let me add for others reading, it's critical that the outer "stub" shaft be installed. If you don't have the outer shaft, the wheel bearing seperate and the hub (with the wheel!) will fall off.

    Thanks the outer stub shaft is fine just the cups where the u joints connect are distorted.
