broken dip stick tube on 304

  • The dip stick tube on my 78 304 was broke off when I got, three years ago. I've got a bolt in the hole and I have to remove it and place the broken tube in to check the oil. It's a pain in the a** , so I'm bad about not checking it like I should. Last night when checking the oil for trip to RC I found it way to low. I've got one valve cover that leaks some.
I think I have to pull the oil pan and drill out the old tube and install a new one. Does anyone know of a fix that will work without having to pull the pan?

I’m thinking of putting it in place and putting some JB weld around the break, but that’s kind of a rig, and the tube has no place to attach to a valve cover bolt, so I’m afraid it my break off and pump oil out of the engine.

  • If it's already broken clean off I wouldn't jury rig the tube in place. The price it too high to pay if it fails (as you said). I think they are just a press fit. Pull the pan and try using an easy out to break it free (or at least get it spinning. Then try to tap it out from the bottom.

I've never done one before but that is probably what I'd try first.
