Doing a little garage cleaning... found a 8.25" axle shaft, 29 spline. Also found a D30 drivers side shaft, not sure what size u-joint but it feels a bit loose.

Either (or both) is yours for a 12pack of Coca-Cola. Going to the landfill next Wednesday, so claim them quick. Located in Marshallton, DE 19808.

It's that time of year, folks! What did your Jeep get for Christmas? Mine got a Quadratec gift certificate (thanks, brother!), which will be put toward a front diff cover. I also treated my Jeep by making it a little more civilized by putting the rear seats back in on Christmas Eve. lol Took out the flat platform I made for camping gear and my 12v fridge.

More splines is stronger, so 29 is good. A D44 or 8.8 are always better to build on for the aftermarket support, of course the 8.8 is a little narrow for a TJ, but we've dealt with it since it's often easier to find than a proper-width used D44. Sadly, I don't know if the 8.25" brackets are in the proper locations for a TJ, probably not...

The XJ 8.25 axles were either 27 or 29spl depending on the year. Those had larger axle tubes, so were considered almost equal in strength to a D44, trading the gears and shafts vs the build strength of the 8.25. A D44 is still stronger and more desirable though.

I'm not really familiar with the Commander specs, but it should have 29spline shafts, 3" axle tubes and the possibility of a factory e-locker or limited slip, in addition to being set up for control arms.

@whatevah did you ever sell your trailer? You might need it if you end up having to bug out!!

I wish I could work on projects. Between homeschooling two kids and money being scarce we're just hanging low.

Yeah, sold it on Saturday to a couple in Maryland. Being at the most essential business in the state and an essential employee, I have virtually zero chance of getting furloughed... so I'm good and stuck here. I have food stuffs to survive for a month if I should need to, water is the only thing I'm short on. :)

I wish I had some Jeep projects to do on my days off! I guess I'll have to resume my house projects instead.

Yeah, I have to work, too... Pain in the butt when we transport a possible COVID patient, 1-2 hours of decon time depending on the severity. But, still want to start getting metalwork supplies and tools. Want to get a tubing roller, pipe bender and maybe a brake, too. Man, what did I get myself into..

I may do one wiring project on the Jeep, but that's firehouse related, not off-road.

My mom got a JLU a few weeks ago, I need to give that a good detail and apply a ceramic coat to it. It's gonna stay mostly stock so may as well keep it shiny.

Since we're all kinda stuck at home in one way or another, either from work closing or nothing to do on the weekends... what projects are you guys working on? I just got a welder delivered, but only have a few sticks of tube leftover from my trailer build. Would love to weld up one of those DIY Jeep fire rings, though.

No offroading at the canal, period! They have really stupid rules at the canal. Sections that you'd expect a car to be safe on, are actually off limits! But the data is all hidden in hunting regulations. Best to stay away from it, at least stay off the north side west of Rt 1. The south side is a bit more obvious what's legal for cars. If it's graded and maintained, it's legal. If it's muddy or rutted, it's not.

Got the Jeep back 6 days later. They said there was metal debris floating around in the trans, and I'd be better off with a reman vs rebuilding. One of those things I know absolutely nothing about, so went with their recommendations. They've been fair to me before and to my brother, so I trusted them.

My JK does definitely get abused. Thinking about it, I've never changed the trans fluid. Oil and coolant, but never the trans... maybe that would have extended the life of it, I dunno.

I think my friend's kids want me to take them to it for camping. I took that weekend off, but not sure about the camping part. They'll have an option to drive on the track, so that should interest some folks.

Just wanted to share my woes with the group... maybe it'll help someone, maybe not.

My JK needs a new auto transmission. Was cruising down Limestone Rd the other night and it dropped to second gear and stayed there. Was on my way home to change into work clothes... checked the fluid when I got home and the level was fine, but it was raining and dark so I didn't check the color or smell it. Drove my 3 miles to work and it seemed ok-ish, maybe some torque converter oddities at shifts. Just before I got to work though, dropped back into 2nd gear. Reversed into my parking spot ok, then tried Drive again. Nothing... just revs. Tried reverse again, nothing. Checked on it later during the night and had a P2784 code. Cleared it and took a spin around the parking lot with no issues. On the drive home, lost gears again just before getting home. Parked, and again... no reverse or drive. Check the fluid and it was dark and smelled burnt. I think it had a P0731 code this time.

Let it sit for a few hours and drove it to a shop. Made it almost a mile before it started acting up, seemed like the torque converter was slipping or shuddering, then only 2nd gear. I was hoping that it just needed a fluid flush, since that always fixed any issue the XJ's AW4 transmission might have. Walked into the shop and after I told them Jeep info, they immediately said it needed a new trans. Apparently it's a recurring problem with these.

My Jeep info... a 2012 JK Rubicon with the NAG1 / W5A580 trans. 106K miles. It's hard a rough life, 4 cross-country offroad trips, 2 trips pulling a trailer and ~50K miles with 35" tires. And, 2 years as a fire police vehicle with a lot of full-throttle runs... I'm guessing it's mostly the latter responsible for the failure.

I guess my advice is to check the trans fluid (quality, not level) every time you check the oil and change it more often than the manual recommends. For regular Jeeps, the manual suggests changing the fluid at 120,000 miles, but at 64,000 miles for "police, taxi, fleet, or frequent trailer towing".

Anyone interested in purchasing a babied 2012 Rubicon with a 2.5" lift and a shiny new transmission? Non-smoker, never offroad. :saint:

Looked at it for a bit this afternoon, it's nearly fully loaded, sticker is $61K. Looks better in person than I expected, thought I wouldn't like the bed profile but I liked it. Has a nice overall stance, it actually looks to be a little taller than a JLU Rubicon. Interior design is a nice change over my JK (I guess JLs are the same). Bedliner looks fine, but I'll probably go for Line-X. Only thing I didn't like was the headliner, too thin, definitely go aftermarket for that.
