87 yj???

  • i'm buying a 87yj 4.0 5 speed 4.10 gears with 35" tires someone told me i need to regear to run the 35"s any body running 35"s with 4.10 gears?? i'm just trying to figure out if it would be ok to run 35's with 4.10 gears till i can regear or get 33's i wont be doin any wheeling with it till i fix this problem.. Thanks Dennis

  • i agree dennis. i have 35's on my TJ with 4.56 gears 4.0L. it is perfect for the highway but i would rather have went to a 4.10 to give me the ability to go back to 33's. i would run it as is and see what you think. i ran 3.07's with 33's for 2 years. i would think it is a similar ratio

if it is a 87 it would also be a 4.2w/carb (unless swapped by previous owner) might make a slight difference as far as power/gearing but i would leave it alone for now.

  • the 87 was a 4.2 engine, 5 speed (most likely ba-10 puegeot) not so good, np 207 transfer case which you cannot put a slip yoke eliminator on. It is possible that its a np231 but unlikely. they both look the same so read the tag.

  • i'm pritty sure with the I-6 and 4:10's you will be alright with 35's but yea cause i have a 87 yj and i am gonna put 35's on it with 4:10's and i got a 4.2 I-6

  • put 33s on it and dont regear...

33s on 4.11s is equal to stock jeep on 30s with 3.73....

35s on 4.29s is egual to stock jeep on 30s with 3.73....

the 4.56s are a little more gear than you need for 35s....

  • FYI, 87 and 88 YJ had rust issues, 89 they started w/galvanized ubs.

Not quite correct. They started galvanizing in '87. My '88 tub has no rust, plenty of dents, but no rust. I kind of depends on how well it was kept. The '93 I am making a street Jeep has a pitted frame, rust on the rockers, tail gate and windshield.
