8.8 build up

  • While looking into axle swap options for my TJ, the 8.8 was recommended as a relatively inexpensive way to go. Anyone know where I might find a used one? Also once I find it, I'll need someone mod it for a TJ application.

  • There is a lot that goes into building an 8.8 and with the cost of labor and all it may be just as much as buying a crate style 44. You will just have to look around for the prices of labor and such. When I was building mine, I spent around 1200 for all of the parts including the axle but i did the work myself. Quadna has had one built for him, he would know better for an approximate cost for the brackets to be welded and gears set. It is definitely worth looking into. For what it is worth, look here http://www.ok4wd.com/index.php…te_88_rear_axle_assembly/ there is a cheap bolt in 8.8. I spent 1200 with detroit locker, gears, master install kit, diff cover, brakes and lines, ebrake crap, brackets, and yoke adapter. For a good 8.8 write-up look here http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/8.8axle/8.8axle-1.htm I used that as a reference when building mine. Good luck in the decision making... If you need any help or have any questions just ask, I will try to help you the best i can through all of it...

  • thanks for the info and offer. I'm sure I'll have more questions no matter which way I go. To add more to the mix, I found a d44 with disc brakes, 4:56 gears (which is what I'm planning to regear to) out of a TJ with 19,000 miles on it that will cost $1500 shipped to my doorstep. It's in a salvage yard in Indiana (gotta love google)
