4.0 Motor swap

  • Looks like the swap is on for this weekend weather willing.
I have heard from Phil and he will pull the motor tomorrow.

I believe I have a loaner truck to go over and back.
Chuck is even thinking about going over for the ride.
He'll let me know. And I'll keep you posted

Icky I need a weather forecast for the weekend.

I am hoping to cut off the old mounts then mount them to the new motor
set the motor in and I may need a small welder to tack the mounts in place. Remove the motor and maybe tow it to your place and finish weld them. (If your offer still stands)

  • it still stands just make sure that you grind all of the paint off the area and get all the grease clean from the metal that will make my welds much better and strong. what time are you panning on getting started on this. I can come over and help and I will bring the welder and help get it prepped then tack it and help get it to the house

  • We'll I am taking a little break
I have all the engine harness disconnected and
just a few vac lines left. and the 2.5 is ready to come out....For good

On a side note Chuck can't make the ride with me so looks like I am going over solo.

  • Thanks Erica,

    Here's an update.

The 2.5 motor and tranny is now out and
sitting on the ground behind the Jeep.

Time now to get it cleaned

  • 4.0 swap update.

    working today
    Joe
    Tony
    Chris (Quad)
    Mike Wright a Local welder.

Well I sure my neighbors did not like ne starting at 8:30
with a grinder. but it wasn't long before we had both 2.5 motor mounts off and cleaned up. After some grinding work to the frame to clean it up. We
were ready to attempt the first trial fit of the 4.0

I decided to buy some stock motor mounts and a local store had them in stock.

The motor went in very smoothly. Chris and Tony needed to do some
modification to the passenger side motor mount tower.

After that Mike displayed his master welding skills by TIG welding the mounts to the frame

Tony did a final weld on the drivers side mount. and we slid the motor in
to it's new resting place. it fits in there like it was made to.
it even has a slight lift like I was using a 1" motor mount lift.

    Now the rewiring starts tomorrow.

    PS:
If anyone in the Dover area is looking for some welding
I will give my highest recommendation to Mike Wright
    He is a great welder.

I'm sure you will soon hear more about him
    his number is 302-284-1231

Also a big thanks to Jerrod (Jbates) for stoping by and loaning his air compressor.

  • Saturday's disappointment.

Looks like the wire harness is not going to just plug in and run. :cmon:

I bought the 4.0's under the dash harness and tach so I am going to swap
    out these wires also.

    I'll keep you posted.

  • Just a quick note I'm going to take a brake from 12 till 2 for Eddie's soccer game and lunch.

I have most of the wire harness out of the dash.
I am also ditching the code alarm while I'm at it.

PS Did I ever happen to say that I hate working under a dash :upset:

  • let me know if you need a hand today. I can swing up there and help out. you might even be able to look at my engine and wiring incase you get stuck. let me know.

  • Thanks Rob but I'm not doing that much today
kind of a one person thing rewireing a dash

I'm also quitting early to head to Hooters tonight

  • BTW:
I now have the old harness out of the dash and I am starting to put in the
    new one.

That code alarm BS was the worst pain. Well that and trying to un hook some of the conectors.

  • updates continue
I started rewire the dash this morning.
If you ever think about pulling the dash wire harness out.

    DON'T DO IT!

    What a major PITA.
I'm now stopping for lunch and the harness is in place and 99%
hooked up. I spent most of the morning like this
    but without the smile

Chuck you manual is coming in very handy!
I had an extra plug on the new harness and Had to look it up.
    Fog light switch wiring

I am having some concerns about the Xcase wires.
My old one had an electric speed pick up and this one looks like a manual.

Oh will I'll get to that when the time comes.

  • OK!
I now have the new dash wire harness and the 4.0 tach installed. Man! I am glad that is over.

I got rid of the old Code Alarm system that came on when it wanted to and would not shut off.

Now I'm ready to tackle the motor harness. After the dash this should be easy. Note : famous last words.

    Let's keep our fingers :lie:

  • Good thing you are getting experienced. I'll keep you in mind when (or if) I rewire mine. :chicken:

Acutally, if I do mine I'm going to go aftermarket. I did one before and it was pretty easy. It only took two of us about 8 hours to figure out what we were doing and run all the wires.
