I'm looking to repair my old lawnmower and rather than buy a pricey rebuild kit I'd like to just find a good running motor to swap in. It currently has a 17HP Kohler and I would like to not step down in size. I'd consider anything bigger though and I'm sure I could adapt.

Not doing that. I'm looking for a used replacement. I can do a full rebuild on mine for about 300 bucks, but that takes time I don't have.

I'm pretty sure you need a vertical shaft engine.... horizontal shafts are for go-carts and the like.

It's a hydrostatic machine. It's shaft drive out both ends. The rear for the hydro pump and the front you can put a pulley on and run a snowblower. Def a horizontal shaft.

8HP is a pretty large step down from 17HP

But it’s a Honda. Install an Intake, some yellow stickers and you are back at 17.
