18 inches

  • This is the length my rear driveshaft needs to be.
I installed the shims Paul Myhre sent me (Big thanks to Paul)
    then measured the length.
Hope to have it cut on monday.

Oh and some bad news I did find a crack in one of my rear springs.
looks like that rear SOA may come sooner rather than later.

Can you run SOA in the rear and SUA in the front?

  • That's how long my rear drive shaft is.

  • I stopped by J&S on my way to work he had called and said my drive shaft was ready. WOW! over night I took it over there yesterday at noon.

Now I need a day off to put it in.

a whole day off man its only 4 bolts

OK an hour but I need to replace the rear seal in the tcase also
    so maybe 1.5 hours

I just want to take a day off

Mine's 4 bolts that are U shaped and threaded on each end which makes it 8 bolts.

But it should only take you 15 minutes! You can do that on your lunch hour! I put mine back on last night. Now I'm waiting for a new brake line to come in (along with a transfer case rebuild kit).

  • Well, let's see...

Gather tools (1, ½" wrench) have a beer. (I guess that's a 13 mm for you Wrangler guys)
Study the job while having another beer.
Climb under the Jeep and try to have another beer but end up spilling it all over yourself.
Climb out and get a towel to clean up then have a beer while thinking how stupid trying to drink while laying down was.
Climb back under the Jeep realize how comfortable laying on the cool concrete is on a hot day and fall asleep.
Wake up not realizing where you are and bang your head on the underside of the Jeep.
Climb out and get a band aid for your head, then get another beer.
Climb back under and realize you forgot something.
Climb out and have another beer while you find your 1 wrench and 4 bolts.
Fall down due to alcohol consumption and crawl the best you can under the Jeep again.
Finally install the drive shaft, trying not to let it slip and hit you in the face.
Crawl out and have beer while you look back at a job well done.

...yeah, that should take a good day.

  • And another glitch
looks like my cut-down XJ driveshaft uses 3 1/4 U Joints
while the yoke on the D35 uses a 3 7/8

    Go figure

I guess it's NAPA Time for the adapter U joint.

  • Picked up the combo U joint from Napa $17.00

:upset: I was informed that NAPA will no longer cary Spicer U Joints
All they have is the NAPA Brand (Read made in Japan) :upset:

Looks like I will need to find another auto store. :folded:

  • They don't carry Timken bearings either.

Pep Boys doesn't carry Spicer U-joints. They carry Brute. I'm not sure if it is any better but its the non-greasable type. I'm told non-greasable are stronger because they don't have the hole in them for the zerc fitting.
