ZJ water problems

• Alright guys, I have a 94 ZJ and for some reason the passenger side floorboard is drenched with water. No apparent reason. I looked up some stuff, but none of it makes sense to me since I'm not a techie. I found this much on it:

I have a 96 grand, and it did the same thing.
I took my passenger seat out and pealed back the carpet an found that the
water was running down the center hump as well.
So not only the back floor, but the front floor was holding water too.
The reason we get the water in the back floor board is you have a heater duct
running along the hump that exhausts right next to the back of the passenger
seat.
I first noticed my problem when i would go around a corner and water would
drip and even run down on my foot.
What i ended up doing was drilling a hole in the duct just under where the
heat exchanger was where it looks like it goes through the floor/firewall on
the passenger side and then over a couple of inches drilled a hole in the
floor/hump.
I then ran a rubber hose from the duct to out through the hole in the floor.
now the interior is dry and it drains great.
Also when i drilled the hole in the duct, it shot several cups of water out
through the hole, so i knew i was in the right spot.
I can take a picture if you wanna see it.

What duct is he talking about there? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do own a hairdryer don't you she asked? Of course I do, he replied, it's in the driveway, it's called a Jeep.

Current - 97 TJ, 99 WJ, 12 Scion tC
Past - 94 ZJ, 02 TJ, 06 Rubicon, 06 XK, 07 Scion tC

• He probably has the up-scale model with a heated rear passenger area.

The only way THAT much water can get into your ducts is from a leaking heater core or from the outside air intake in front of the windshield. You'd know if it was the heater core because it would smell like anti-freeze (unless you're running straight water). The outside air intake should have a drain hose to prevent rain water from building up and running through the duct work. My guess is a spider made a nest in the drain hose.

• I have a LTD with 99% of the options it came with that year. It didn't dawn on me to check the backseat though. It must not be the heater core because its 100% water. Where is this drain hose located?

• You'll have to dig into it. I'm not sure for the ZJ. There has to be some means of getting the water out of the cabin air intake. There should be a way of removing the grille that keeps leaves out of there. It is probably at the bottom of the windshield, tucked under the back of the hood.

CJs are all in the open so they are a different beast. We just have big hose dumping onto the ground in the engine compartment.

• there's a similiar problem common to tj's. like slimer said, the clogged drain tube in the fresh air vent is the culprit. rotted leaves, twigs, etc...that's what clogs it up. i have had to pull my vent cover and clear it out twice on my tj with a coathangar....otherwise after hard rains i'd have a filled-up rubber floormat. i'm not sure what it would entail to gain access to it on your jeep, but time is free and you'd only need a coathangar or a quick shot of air from the compressor to clear it.

• Hmm. Now that I think of it, TJ probably has the same issue since when it rains it gets soaked. Thanks guys, y'all are great! ;D I'll check out the both of them tomorrow and tell ya what I find. :spinrhead:

• Okay, I think I found this duct thing you guys speak of...

I take it this is the culprit? :help:

• It would be a good place to start looking. Remove the grille and see if you can find a drain of some sort. There has to be one somewhere. You might also crawl underneath to see if you can find where it dumps out.

• First, try to determine where the drain comes out. It says somewhere in the frame but ZJs don't have actual frames as I understand. Regardless, it can't just dump into the "frame" without the frame having a drain hole as well. If you can find a drain hole in the "frame" then you may be able to fish a coat hanger through it to remove any debris.

You may find mud caked up in the "frame" hole.

• Thanks, I'll start with that then. If I can't find a drain hole I'll just have to take the dash apart. :bang:
