4.0 or 4.7L

  • Looking in to a possible WJ or WK, something like 2000 and up. Everywhere I look theres about 10, 4.0's per lot, with maybe and I mean maybe only 1, 4.7 V8 per lot. I'v read that the 4.0 is rated to pull 5000, while the 4.7 is 6500. Anyone with real world experience wanna chim in on how noticeable the difference is? I found a few 4.7's but Im picky!

    02' F250 SD w/ 285's and 17x9 1079's
99' XJ w/ 8" and 35's - GONE!

I miss wheeling! :(

  • I just bought a '03 V8. The towing numbers are right, 6500 with the V8. I had the 6 in the TJ and like the V8 better! (who wouldn't!) :spinrhead:
Mileage numbers are about the same, so it made the decision a no brainer for me.

  • My wife has the 03 WJ with the 4.0 and I love it. It's towed everything I needed it too with no problem. Plenty of pick up also.
She has 108K on it now and it still runs strong.

  • Im looking at an 01 wj 4.0 with 61,000
    leather,loaded

I havent drove it yet but im just concerned about acceleration and pickup

  • the 4.0s actually get worse milage than the 4.7 because it has to work harder..4.7 all the way.

  • My wife went from an '03 4.0 to the V8 in her current one. Both are AWD. I can tell you that the 4.0 was quick because of the traction. On wet roads, it could hang with my Ram because if I got on it, that Hemi was all over the road. But that was about it. Now on her V8, I drive that to the fire station in bad weather because the traction control means I can punch it and it grips and takes off faster than my TJ on dry pavement. It's really nice having that power when I need it, but also knowing it's under control when I don't.

  • sounds like a no brainer on the V8 but Its gonna be hard finding the right one with me being picky....Let me know If you see anything, looking for something with around 50k, 01 and up, V8, tagged around 16k or under....

the words use to scare me but wont be to big of a deal this time around, this would be a mall crawler only...

  • Ok, even after the debate here I am still going to go with a WJ 4.0 selectrac

I already have a lot of performance parts for the 4.0 and have decided that is the route I will take

I test drove a 4.0 today and I have to say.... It was quite quick..... had a lot more power than I thought

    Thanks for the help
