When you select "resize/resample" from the "image" menu, make sure you check "preserve aspect ratio" in the lower left hand corner and "resample" in the lower right. That will fix your problem.

the avatar im using now from my gallery
i just cant get it small enough and still look right
as it is now

it looks stretchedIf it's rectangle like 800x600, it's not going to resize to 110x110 (square) w/o distortion.
Either crop it, or resize it to 110 wide and let the height fall where it may.

no matter what i try
i cant get it square -
Try using pixels as your unit of measurement. Also, try selecting an area on your picture then drag the individual sides to get the content you are looking for. Once you have it into a square you can resize it into 110x110.
