Trail Report July 17th RC

  • Posting this up so Randy and everybody else can fill in the particulars... I can start by saying that I had an awesome time as usual and thanks to Randy for letting me ride/drive! A pretty hot day with some annoying bugs from time to time, but all in all I think everybody had fun. We started out as a fairly big group, most people having camped Friday night. Once we all registered and aired down, this was roughly the breakdown as we headed out.
    shorebird
    w/ joshill
Buster Stewart w/ stomper’s wife Kathy
    stomper w/ Daddanelena
    Anx1ous w/ mom RedOliver
JKGray10 w/ wife Amanda and nephew
    trikpony w/ wife
    Altierior w/ 2 nieces
    B w/ Jess

The top of Stair Step got Altierior stuck between a rock and a hard place (namely a tree on the rear passenger side panel) and after B winched him out for recovery #1, we watched as Shorebird spotted Anx1ous at the bottom (pic from other thread) as B got spotted down from a tricky spot by Daddanelena and stomper. Moving on past Hill Climb Altierior had to give it a try, making it up after some effort. Trikpony followed with some spotting by Daddanelena. After the rest of us headed up to meet them at the top, B decided to break his tie rod on the shortcut to trail C, so Altierior and Daddanelena escorted him back to the parking lot for a quick fix to get him home. Our group passed the large gathering of Xterras on the side of Yellow Jacket, and RedOliver took her turn at the wheel as Anx1ous spotted her down the next obstacle with everyone else clearing it nicely as well. I had my first spotting experience with shorebird on a particularly nerve-wracking section of "O" where JKGray10 ended up stuck on his passenger side tire. Recovery #2 went swimmingly as mentioned in the other thread by Buster Stewart’s winching around a rock as Anx1ous was concerned about his oil pressure gauge issue. Good time to stop for lunch! Continuing on, trikpony took the lead onto Cemetery where shorebird had some difficulty deciding to get stuck either between two trees or on a big rock, finally getting spotted out by stomper (who btw got some serious air going over a rock hill there). Buster Stewart decided on the big rock and winched himself off for recovery #3, but looked great going over the next two large rocks. Anx1ous took the hard way out, going up the rocky hillclimb there with Altierior as passenger and trikpony spotting. Recovery #4 and #5 took some time as shorebird and Buster Stewart hit some soft soil after sliding off a rock in the same spot. After that we decided to just go without too many more challenges, at which point trikpony and Anx1ous had to call it a day. And then there were 5. After hearing we were sticking to blues, I took my turn at the wheel! Past Big Rocks and onto 10, through the frog ponds and down through the woods for some nice wheeling until Randy got a phone call and next thing you know we’re crossing Rock Creek on 13. JKGray10 needed a little help getting through the creek bed on the other side, and we continued up onto the front side without too many more incidents. We passed the Xterras again on the way back to the comp course for the requisite poser shots, where JKGray10 made it up onto the helmet and my mom missed out on her chance to ride shoddy over a little hill with Randy. Permagrin on the ride home.

    (Thanks John!)

  • Ya, Not sure when I bent my tie rod in to a pretzle but I deff noticed that when my stearing wheel was up side down and I wasnt able to turn left. Thanks again to John and his trailer. We are able to bend it back to some what straight. Wayne always with the support and extra hand. Thanks again to these two I was able to make it home. Im currently on hold with quadratec ordering new parts as I type this. By the time I made it home. The tie rod was again in a U shape. No its sitting in parts, waiting. Thanks again to all! Still had a great time.

Branden, PM Quantum73 on here. He has a Currie steering set-up that would be ideal for you. It is by far the best steering you can put on a TJ. Did you trailer it or drive your Jeep up there?

Sounds like you guys had a great time. I made it to Rausch Creek yesterday but it was for the National Hare Scramble on the Powersports side.

  • very nice trail report, JoAnn! thanks for that. looks like you have most everything covered.

a few minor corrections: the rock-winching event before lunch was on the black rocky section of 'O'. trikpony took us to 'cemetery' after lunch. past 'big rocks' is trail 10, then we hit 13 after crossing rock creek.

  • Thanks for picking up the slack and getting the "Trail Report" going, JoAnn. Your report with John's input pretty much summed up the day. I had a blast as usual. It is awesome to see the seasonal changes at RC. This was billed as a black/blue ride, and I think it lived up to it's billing. Thanks to all who rode, and I hope the D.D. Jeeps were ready to go back to work this morning. Mine was, sporting a new exhaust leak!

  • Heres some pics of the trail ride. Seems to be a lot of pics of John and my jeep. The wife was in charge of the pictures so sorry for the lack of every one else.

  • Nice pictures Jk. Well I did make it home with Buster Stewart babysitting me most of the way. I finished my damage assement tonight and well most of the 30 year old parts got trashed. I had to tighten all of the steering gear box bolts as well as the pitman arm nut. :bang: Keith C had another thread about post ride checks if I had done a better job of that my ride home would have been a lot nicer (insert white knuckles and bad words :censored: ). I will need a new tie rod and stearing stabilizer. I spun a rear hub and trashed the axel, I think it happened after we went across rock creek and in that purpel trail were I pulled Matt. Radiator mounts are shot again so this time it will be getting replaced instead of fixed. All in all it was a great day and all the stuff that got trashed (except the bumber and fender) were do to get replaced and upgraded. I will be up and running intime for the topless for tatas run and hope to see some of you there.

  • Post the URL of it.

  • It was a great day at RC! Thanks Randy for getting us back to the parking lot in one piece. Good job JoAnn on the summary of the day. Thanks to everyone who posted pictures. Prior to last Saturday I had used my winch 1 time, and had never uses my high lift for recovery. On Saturday I used the winch 2 time for me, and 3 time to assist others, and it was still a great day! Damage report: A small bend in the tie rod, steering damper and right rear shock damage, but it is all good. Cleaned up the JK and used it to take a customer to lunch on Monday.
See you all at the next trail ride! :driving:

  • Nope, the exhaust leak was all mine, did it on Cemetery, and JoAnn you still can have the left seat when you want it. I gotta stay off the phone and concentrate on guiding (even though it was work related). Great pics of a great day!
