This is probably going to take some 'splaining...
I'm selling an Intel SS4200-E. WTH is that you say and why do I want it (btw, you do want it, you just don't know yet)? It's network attached storage which means it's a bunch of hard drives that are external you can access anywhere from your home network. It's perfect for storage of tons of movies (whether family friendly or...other), backups, music and pictures. All of the devices on your home network can write and store files here.
But here's the magic...it's RAID 5. But, Stafford...I know what that is as well as my mom knows what a Dana 60 is you say. It's protected storage. Inside the box are 4 1TB drives and you get 3TB of usable storage. Without getting deep into the math, data and what is called parity bits are spread across the 4 drives making it look like one big drive. 4TB of storage = 3TB of usable storage after the parity overhead. The important part is you can lose any one of the 4 drives and you don't lose data. Replace the drive and you are back to redundant with no loss of data. This is very, very good for you guys who have a ton of pictures you don't want to lose. Yeah, you can backup to carbonite or something but that will take forever to restore over the intarweb. Keep a local copy as well on reliable storage like this so your data is safe. There's additional USB and eSATA ports on the back if you're really paranoid and want to have this backup to yet another drive.
It supports DLNA so you can watch movies and display pictures directly from it to a lot of BluRay players, PS3, Roku, etc. It also supports PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) to transfer files directly from a digital camera but I never messed with that and it also supports iTunes but never messed with that either (obviously). I upgraded the RAM in it, 512MB to 1GB I think but it's been a while. I believe it will take up to 2TB drives so you could upgrade it to 6TB usable if needed but don't quote me on that. There's also a decent hacking community for it to install Windows Home Server and FreeNAS on it but I never really looked into it.
