Trail Report - Rausch Creek 02/23/08 Trail Ride & PICs

  • Trail report for RC on 02/23/08

We met up at RC about 8:30, and broke up into 3 groups.
    First group: Subvet & naughty, Knoxrents & cj8, J-man & friend.
    Second group: Fzmax, Andyzj, Schiaradonna.
Third group: whatever, Andrew?, and 4 jeeps from MD.

Jerry's group took off first, My group was close behind.
Wayne ran a little late and his group were on the trail shortly after us.

Was a nice day at RC, the fresh snow covered ground contributed to a challenging and picturesque trail ride.

This portion of the trail report will cover the ride my group did today (Subvet & naughty, Knoxrents & cj8, J-man & friend).

We headed thru trail K and F onto trail 5 slid around here and there…traction was a rare item today.
It was here we had our first trail damage…Jman placed 2 holes in the sidewall of his front tire.
He was able to patch it up with the help of Billy’s tire plug kit, using only 3 plugs, pressed the tire back up with the CO2 tank and we were on our way.
We then went onto B to get onto trail 4 & yellow jacket ridge.
Onward we headed to Trail 2, the frog hole and crawlers ridge…Our second trail damage occurred due to my TJ having a high affinity for trees today…resulting in a small ding and cracked taillight housing…and for some reason my tie-rod did not want to stay straight.
Going down Crawlers ridge made for more excitement when Billy was attempting to do an endo in his TJ (which he did do, much to his surprize)…we all made it down taking slightly different lines.
After sliding down the ridge, we paused for lunch.
After throwing sandwiches down the throat, we took a nice easy scenic ride in the snow to the south property via the 101 trail to Lake Christy.
The hills at the lake were much more challenging than usual.
Most of them were a sheet of thick ice covered in snow.
That was a good time to move on onto trail 21…had to finish the challenge of 21 where we did not finish last month in the ice & snow.
Alas, with more snow today than last month, trail 21 was not at all any easier but we got thru it today.
We paused at Camel Back for a few mins on the way to Snakebite.
It was here where our last trail damage off the day occurred.
You guessed it…Jman did not let us down and sheared one bolt off his rear drive shaft.
Ahhh.. Duct tape the universal tool was wrapped around the u-joint so we could get off Snakebite and onto a green trail.
At this point, we called it day and headed back toward the staging area played around on some icy rock piles and the snow covered comp course then packed it up for the day.

Other than the slight trail damage that incurred today, it was a great run overall.
As always, most any day on the trail is a great day

I think that about covers it.
If I missed anyone or anything…let me know.

    PIC to Come

  • And for the green/blue group...

I had cherokeeguy from DEJA and 2 XJs, 1 YJ and 1 TJ from Fran's group.

We started off on B and took that to trail 2. We ran that past the frog hole and picked up Trail 1 back over to B. From there we ran all of the 101 trail to the "hills" trail to shortcut over to the Powerline to take us into the West Property.

I did a quick loop on one of the hills and slid sideways down one of the hills until my driverside tires caught traction and I almost flopped. *yeek* I yelled "help!" out the window and 3 guys grabbed my rack and stood on the passenger rock rails to give me some help.

We then drove down the Power line and crossed over to H and tried to find 18 or 10 in the clearcut area but I got stuck in a dozer rut. Yanked out of it backwards and took a better line down and ran 10 backwards back up to H and then took 11 down to 14 and ran that around back to 11 and then went to find 19A. There we had to move a fallen tree (which fell further onto my back) and then ran it until we found a bigger fallen tree and a clearcut area. So we jumped back unto 11 and went up to 12A to play around a bit. I heard somebody on the cb say they had a busted ujoint so we stopped and asked around (a different group, turns out) and ate lunch in the middle of the trail. We ran 12A and 12B without too much difficulty and then fought the ice uphill on 12C to get back to H. Turned up H to leave and started sliding backwards, so a uturn was in order for me and we took H down until we could crossover to the Power lines again.

After pausing for a poser group shot on the hills, we tried to pick up Tower Rd but after 100 feet or so it was solid ice. No uphill progress possible. After letting some local kids sled down the hill a few times I reversed/slid back down to Power line and we ran the Hills trail up to 101 trail back to E and closed the gate to keep anybody else from sliding onto the kids on the road. E was solid ice after the gate.

Now back in the East property we ran D and picked up the Crawler Ridge trail and ran that back to Trail 2 we skipped earlier and then the rest of Trail 1b. We took the Pole Line up the hill climb and picked up C to loop back to F. We ran A back to K through the Comp course, played a little there and everybody started getting ready to leave. I waited for Frans group to get back, handed out trail badges and then waiting for the 3rd group to show. After that, I chatted with Andy for a while, then watched a couple buddies from NAXJA play on the comp course and jumped back into my warm XJ to thaw my frozen feet and drive home. :)

another good day on the trails...

Yeah. I'm not going to bother with my video camera anymore. If I'm going to kill myself, it should at least look good. ;)
The video was okay but you can't see that steepness of the drop off.
