** GWNF - Spring 2010 Trip - Trail Report **

  • Well, we are home.

I only made it for Sat. night so can't really report much except the fire was hot and the beer was cold.

I'll post some of Patti's videos shortly.

Only trail issue was a mechanical problem yesterday, and it didn't involve a Jeep. :innocent:

Apparently Jim still hasn't learned left vs. right. :innocent:

  • :( I thought someone was taking my video coming down Dictum but guess not. Oh well I think there are pictures to prove it. LOL!

Thursday was pretty much set up day for BlackFlag & wife Lynn, Chief & son Michael, Rock Pirate & his son Chris (Mr. Adorable) and me.

Friday Captain arrived in the morning and we went up Second Mountain and found that it was closed off and they are building houses back there.

From there we went to Kephart, then down Switzer Lane where there is a birding and wildlife trail down my the resevoir. Took pictures and had lunch by the water.

We headed back to camp to see if anyone else arrived yet and then headed to Seneca Rocks Recreational Area, took in the scenery, visited the old homestead and took pictures.

By the time we got back MaybeOneDay (Nick) and his friend Amy were there and Woody and Flutterby and kids arrived shortly after that. It rained off and on and we ended up under Captains EZup and building a fire there.

Saturday we all headed out to the back side of Second Mountain, Dictum and Meadow Knob. Amy's Bronco had some issues that held us up a bit but she was a good sport about our ribbing. Nick ended up towing her out of the trail. RockPirate has some issue but they were easily fixed. Keith arrived and had dinner with us and campfire side chatting & drinking.

Sunday was pack up and come home day. This was a short version. I will let everyone else chime in and add to my story.

    :jeep: Patti

p.s. Much thanks to Jim, Michael, Monty & Lynn for all the help

  • how come my video is only 49 sec long? lol I'll have to post the one that I have. But i did have a great time, Amy too even tho her 4 wheel drive actuator took a crap. That was no biggie, we removed it very promptly with help from everyone. then later down the same trail her bronco quite all together. thinking she ran out of gas I towed the Bronco 4 miles up and down the mountain with no issues. if you count that her brakes didn't work after a mile into the tow due to no vacuum to the brake booster. so i had woody in front of us giving terrain up dates. we would set the e brake on long down hills and still reaching 25 mph! apparently it didn't work so well. I was lucky to stay in front with out her crashing into me. We got to the top of the mountain left Amy with the bronco still hooked to my Cherokee (as added safty. ) and we went and got my truck in trailer from the camp. We all pulled together and got it loaded . I got it to the gas station filled it up and still wouldn't start. remembering there are 2 fuel pumps in the bronco i check the one in the frame rail and found the ground wire was off. put it back on and she was good to go! ( if only i fig that out 4 hours prior )

but over all was a great trip and wait to get out more later this year
Thank you everyone that came for the help!

  • Oh yeah, sorry about the vid, my battery died right in the middle of it and by the time I switched the battery you were down. :(

  • Made it home around 3:30 unloaded my hitch haul (Hernia maker as Keith calls it) so nothing would get wet and rested on the couch.

Then I woke up was not planning a nap but it was well deserved.

Had a great time as always.

Someone has to have Patty Going down Dictum.

  • Good ride, Dictum Trail was good and doing Flagpole/Meadow Knob backwards was fun.

Trip was a blast. Turned out to be a great place to test a new jeep, Now i know what parts i need to upgrade to run better next time :roflmao:

  • Here are some random thoughts and thank-you's about the trip...

[li]Thanks to Blackflag, as usual, the firewood arrived "on time, on target." Monte, I don't take that for granted, so thanks much. (Thanks also for bringing your topo map.)[/li]
[li]After Thursday's outing, Patti is now certified as a "trail boss." Thanks for guiding us![/li]
[li]Thanks to everyone around the ol' campsite for the sharing of food, equipment and parenting, not necessarily in that order. It's nice to know we can count on each other.[/li]
[li]Thanks to Amy for breaking down on the trail...it totally took the pressure off me!![/li]
[li]Thanks to Rockpirate for keeping a close eye (well, two eyes actually) on my popup as I towed it up and down the mountain. [/li]
[li]Thanks for Captain for buying a new-fangled Coleman coffee maker. [/li]

Captain suggested a new "trail rule" that I like. Whenever a convoy stops on a narrow trail we should all pull to one side or the other to make a walking lane. Sounds logical, but we don't do it. Bob, be sure to bring it up at the meeting. We'll call it "Captain's Law!"

I liked buying gas for $2.33 a gallon in Virginia! I certainly bought enough of it!! The ride home seemed extra long. Part of the reason was that my AC didn't work right, so Michael and I were not comfortable. We stopped at the Route 301 truckstop and bought a $15.99 non-tuneable CB antennae -- mine had broken on the trail -- which seems to work really well. I didn't take as many pics as in the past, but will post up what I have later. If anyone has any good pics of me coming down Dictum Bypass, please send via email.

When engaged in conversation with a fool, be sure he is not similarly engaged.
