Jeep YJ Build Up

  • Looking good CJ beadlocks look great. I'll be following this build and getting ideas for my YJ. Not sure what you are running for a Transmission skid but I just bought a Undercover Fab Works skid for mine and all I can say is it's beefy 77lbs. 1/4" steel. www.undercoverfab.com

I bought the same skid but about 6 months ago, I ordered the high clearance steel skid and front and rear diff covers, it was a good deal because at the time shipping was free on all 3!

Thanks for watching, the boat sides and wheels will be done this week, then rework the rear suspension, and mount the cage and it's off to line-x for a few days and then the painters...

  • today school started so i did not get much done. Im just about done with the pass side boat sides, ill finish up the flares tomm.

  • over the past week i have done quite a bit. First i mounted both fenders and got them all lined up, took the boatsides to a local metal shop and had them bend up two steel plates 3/16's to cover the fenders, becasue the boat sides stop st the fire wall. Poor design, anyway then i started on the rust issue on the driver side of the jeep, where the front flare was mounted under the jeeP (the p at the end of the jeep) the rust had worked its way up over the lettering, i had to clean it all out and fill it back in, took awhile to do this, i was concerned that i would not ba able to save the P of the jeep lettering but i was able to. I had to pull the exhaust and rear drive saft, and then took the wire wheel to the frame, took off the old brake lines and mounts, anything not needed, and cut off the old spring hangers. I also cut off the old rear cross member and starte mocking up the rear strech. Also played around with the mounting of everything under the hood. more to come.
Boat sides w extenison that i have to weld

the only problum is that the heat from welding warped the steel on the boat sides, its a little wavy but some time with some hammers and bondo and it will be right.

  • just so everyone knows the suspension is only mocked up at the time, i still have to weld on the front spring mounts for the rear spring then put the weight on the suspension and do some tests, the rear bumper is just mocked up, i have to weld in the d rings, hitch, install tthe back up lights and weld it all up

  • today and yesterday i got the boat sides extended and fitted, then i mocked up the rear and welded the rear bumper together

here is the rear, its only tach'd on, i have to finish the welding this week,

  • I'm going to box the bottoms of the spring hangers and tie them into the frame, then I have frame tie ins that are about 6 inches long that run along the frame, as far as rubbing or dragging the springs would hit the rocks first... But moving the axle back makes a better approach angle anyway, more to come

  • This week and weekend i dident get to much done, i did get the cage mocked into the Yj, have to do mone cutting and weling on the floor plates but shouldent be too bad, i have to finish welding the rear bumper in and its frame tie in's, also after the cage is mocked i have to make mounts for the seats and the harnesses and mock up the fuel system. this week should be fun

got the 3inch lift on the XJ and have a good bit of work left on it, it ran like shit so igve it a tune up and it runs great but needs a new exhaust.. needs new brakes all around, and i have to fix the hood latch, other than that it looks good, Gained about 7inches of clernece from the fenders to the ground and roughly 4 inches of diff clearnece. i love the way it looks, going to order a winch bumper and overhead cargo rack soon. Also going to pick up some steel this week for the rock rails..

  • well this pask week i finished welding the rear bumper, including frame tie ins and built and mounted the front bumper, cleaned up the winch plate, and remounted the winch with its new line. also started on the fuel tank, should have that finished tomm. This week ill get the cage tie ins and start that project, then ill do the seats and such. moving along....

    the fuel cell

i have to finish the mounting system for the cell, ill prob get to that tomm

  • Word of advice.... Get a sheet of rubber and make a gasket for the fuel pump ring. I tried rtv, paper and cork and all of them leaked like crazy. The rubber survived a rollover so I'm confident it will hold up.... Even on it's side. My .02

    2000 Sahara, All custom...
    2000 Cherokee Police package, Beater....

I may be slowest and the stupidest

  • RTV isn't compatable with gasoline. You found that out the hard way, as did I when I tried to use it to seal up a carb.

  • This week end I did focus alot on the xj, pulled off the frontend and correctly mounted the radiatior and tranny cooler, dropped off the new fender, flare, and header panel to get painted, should be done Tuesday, and started mounting the beadlocks. Also picked up a sales tranny for the Xj.

  • Today is the fist day of spring break, the goal is to have this this sitting on its wheels and running by the end of the weekend. today i had to pull the sttering box off and replace the mounting nuts, so i welded some grade eight nuts to some washers and welded them to the frame, had to get the old ones out first, not to much work tho. i had to grind down the steering box adapter about 1/8 an inch to get the holes to line up. Then i added the steering box brace. next came the bottom steering and the mounting of the ram, still have to finsih weld it but thats where it will be, mounted the shcoks and the front brakes and lines, tomm i will do some of the engine bay and start on the track bar in the rear as well as the shocks. i have sent out the drive shaft to tom woods to get it lengthend, so the jeep will run but not move this weekend. more to come.

    where the problum started

    fixed

    looks good

also rolled up the front 37s today and mocked them on, it looks like with this supension i might be too tall, im sure i could clear 40s with this setup

  • well this week was a big week. first comes the Xj, i made a roof rack to hold the spare tire, started with this and finished with this

    and installed the front end

going to order the winch bumper this week,

next the Yj, im having the steering arms reamed out as well as the pitman arm, mounted the tires, and decided that i would carry the spare in the back becasue their will never be enough room in the back for a seat so the jeep is now strictly a two seater. i had to order some stuff from ballistic fab for the cage, so ill work on that next week. other than that the wheel base is at 101'' and the space of the tires left to right is 82'', the pitbulls stand at about 36'' also finsihed the track bar and the rear shocks and brakes.

    rear shocks

    track bar

    finished

    bolts for four wheels

    wheels

    on its wheels

    more to come

  • Well these past few days have been exhausting, mounting the cage was a pain, had to cut off all the old mounts, shorten some, and make a few different angles, got the seats mounted and the cage sitting flat on the floor finally, still waiting on parts, the cage tie in kit, high steer arms and studs. Have to order an e brake and make a different center console, have to mount the tailgate and then do some cross bracing on the cage.also mounted the amp to the bottom of the drivers seat. So much to do so little time...
