wi-fi password safety

  • My daughters friends came over the day and they wanted to access our wi-fi connection. instead of giving them the password i logged them on . Is there any harm in giving them the password? other than free internet for them, can they access my computer files?
    thanks in advance

  • The only issues are if you have shares set up , then they could reach files on other computers. Also if anything is done legal it could be traced back to your internet service. Like kiddie porn ect other activity. You could easily change the password.

  • My niece once came over and tried to get on with her lap top. Why she brought her computer to a family get together is beyond me. She said, "You're network is locked!" I said, "I know!"

I wouldn't have given out the password either.

  • some routers have a "guest mode" where you can enable a second wifi that's separate from the main network. That'd be the best way to go if your router offers it.

If not... do you use file sharing between computers in your home? If not, just make sure that all shares are disabled and that the Windows firewall settings are configured to block file access. That should be enough for security on a home wifi network.
