Put a new speedo gear in my yj to finally know how fast.. or slow rather, I'm going. Went to test it out and it didnt register. The diameter of the plastic wheel on the new gear is much less than diameter of original gear. I'm assuming I somehow have the wrong gear, even though it is right length. I think the problem is the new gear is not meshing with the driven gear on the shaft?? Anyone else ever have this problem

The gear is first inserted into the speedo housing until it clicks, then the assembly is inserted into the transfer case carefully so as not to cut the o-ring. Finally, the assembly must be "clocked" in such a way that the new diameter gear makes contact with the ACME threads on the output shaft. It can be clocked to one of 4 positions - each one being 90° past the previous one. Then it stays in that position due to the two tabs on the forked foot held down with one bolt.
Basically, you'll need to rotate it 90° so it can make contact as the new speedo gear is more than likely smaller in diameter and no longer touching the ACME threads on the output shaft.
**If you look at the housing when it's removed, you'll notice that the speedo gear is slightly off from centered much like an eccentric cam or lobe. This feature is what allows you to rotate the housing 90° to have the speedo gear be closer or further away from the output shaft's ACME threads. Hope this isn't too unclear**
