Saw this on CNN today. NHTSA says the placement of the gas tanks in in 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002 to 2007 Jeep Libertys is unsafe. Chrysler is refusing to issue a recall.

This is a flashback to Lee Iacocca and the Ford Pinto. There is a cost associated with a human life and at a certain point, it makes more business sense to take the risk and not issue a recall. It seems like Chrysler is taking a similar stance in this instance.

Pretty much all manufacturers do the same thing. I'm waiting for a corporate engineer / loss control guy to come to my work to 'evaluate' a problem i found in a new model line that I can't legally ( at this point) fix. Depending on how likely the issue would be to cause harm, as opposed to the cost feilding a repair for all effected models, asnd figureing in the likelihood of lawsauits then gives the answer as to what happens.
