new parts installed now problems

  • last week i got my new cooper tires installed
    went from 31's to 33's
had the 3"springs in the tj for awhile now
    this week i installed ,
    new front adj track bar
    rear adj track bar
    shocks
and a swing away with bumper
    my problem is now that
i have noticed that the tj pulls to the d/s and even more so when braking
and it doesnt matter what side of the raod crown it is on

this is what i have done so far ,............................

check and adjusted the alignment twice
    so thats good to go
thought it was a t/b issue
so i measured and adjusted, did not fix
thought it was a stuck d/s brake caliper
r/r the caliper and not fixed, now im thinking it is the p/s brake caliper
i will r/r that tomorrow ( ihave yet to do this )
i have swaped the adj t/b for the stock one and didnt fix it ,
so i reinstalled the adj. t/b
i have installed new to me
    4) lca's and
    2) uraca's
and installed the wheel spacers b/c of the moabs
my rubi has 104000 miles on it
and has the stock steering set-up and the stock tre's and balljoints
    any thoughts?
could it be caused by a bent axle tube and/or a bent steering knuckle?
    thanks for looking

  • Find a parking lot with a fairly high curb and drive at it about 25-35mph at an angle that will cause the passenger side tire hit first. That should bend something far enough to make the passenger side tire pull to the right enough to balance out the other tire. If that doesn't work, I'm all out of options.

Note to everyone but Andrew: Please, for the love of god don't anyone actually try this. I've made some jokes on here before about stuff like this that people took seriously.

Note to Andrew: Go ahead and let her rip, buddy. Oh and I want to see the pics too. If not yours, then the pics the state trooper and insurance company take will be just fine.

  • yeah mines doing the same thing
i think it has to do with the brakes because when i apply them it pulls even harder to the drives side than if i just let it drift

if you figure it out let me know so i can do the same

  • my steering sometimes feel like it's pulling slightly to the right, sometimes to the left. then I realized that I'm driving in vehicle shaped like two boxes. wind blows this thing everywhere :)

that said... my brakes stick occasionally, that might do it. on the January RC trip, my front passenger caliper wasn't releasing... talk about pulling to the right! didn't realize it until we got to the Exxon and smelled the brakes.

  • #1 swap tires front to rear

#2 Check for slop in the steering box(I am not familiar enough with the new boxes but the old ones commonly were shot by 100k)

#3 Replace the TRE's (at the least ) and the ball joints...... If they arent' toast they probably are close to it.

  • sorry for jumping on the bandwagon - but i've had the same issue with mine for almost a year now. the only difference is that mine pulls to the right.

i've rotated/balanced my tires numerous times - no change.
aligned three times myself, once at a shop to verify the caster angles - no change.
all brand new TRE's with the new currie setup - no change.
measured the trackbar plenty of times and have the axle centered - no change.
measured the rear arms and the axle is centered as well - no change.
measured from front driver's hub to rear passenger's hub...and opposite as well making an X measurement to verify that the wheelbase isn't an issue - no change.
checked to ensure that all four of my brakes spin freely when not applied - no change.

there sometimes feels as if there is slop in the steering box...but i know that TJ's are notorious for having that "dead spot" when changing a direction. i think that is due to the slight shift left or right in your suspension when you induce the turn - the design of the steering sort of negates the input when your jeep starts leaning. i could be way off on that one but i can sort of picture it in my head. so i don't know if the dead spot i'm feeling is just the "TJ" factor or if my steering box is unhappy. i only have 39k or so on my jeep...but had some serious death wobble issues along the way that may or may not have caused an issue with the box. oh, when the jeep pulls slightly to the side, if i allow it to pull it won't continue to increase the turn (involuntarily crank the steering wheel) but will only turn an inch or two and slowly swerve to the right.

again, sorry for hijacking the thread, andrew. hopefully someone can shed light on our problems and we can both fix our jeeps.

  • i have swapped the tires from side to side in the front but not front to rear
    will do that tom .

i have checkec the ball joints
they sem fine but i will r/r in a few days i hope

    same with the steering box
    i will check tom
    and see whats up

chris no problem , it all good
and mine has the same effect
if i dont correct the swerve it will continue to turn around a corner and move the steering wheel in relation

    on another note
i found today that if im driving less than say 50mph
    it doesnt do it
but if i am going faster it will,
front axle is off by about a half inch
and the rear is off maybe a haevy heavy

tonight i installed a set of 31's and the jeep feels perfect
    frpm capereds jeep
his jp iss fine with 33's and mine is with 31's
    sp im clueless
i thought and was hoping for a bent control arms ,but thats not the case
    maybe a bent axle
it was hit pretty hard 3weeks after i got it
there has to be something im just over looking now that the 33's r on
but like i said , seans jp aswell as keiths jp are both fine
so whats wrong with mine?(ours jeeps)

  • still having the same problems
seems to be doing it when i brake now
    and not just driving
i have already r/r both calipers
i tried swapping the rotors from side to side
    but no luck
so my next step is to buy iand install new brake lines

since noone down here seems to carry anything for a jeep
    not u-joints not ball joints
man im having trouble getting parts
hell even the local dealer didnt know what a centering ball was
so i could rebuild my driveshaft

man i hope to get this worked out
i have to order the ball joints and the tre's
ill do that in a week or so

  • ok newest update
    installed new brake lines
seems to be what was wrong
tho i have only driven with them for a few miles
need some more miles to make sure
got yj brake lines from federated / manlove down here at the beach
    for $58 bucks
here are the part #'s in case someone uses search
    they r specific to side
    bh38861
    bh38862
since i have ordered the new ball joints
    i will r/r those soon

That's MR. Captain Beach , to you

  • did your air pressure change on the tires because of the cold..
sometimes air pressure can bring on death wobbles at different speeds...
too much pressure and it hops and bounces all over the place..
too little and the jeep pulls hard especially when braking...
tire pressure is different with each set of tires.. sometimes different from front to back...
