Learned Something New Today

  • If you use good quality strong welding magnets for setup and are welding too close to them they can actually pull the puddle away from where you are trying to put it and seriously mess with your head to the point that you wonder if there's something wrong with the machine or maybe you forgot how to weld. :)

    MIG.

  • Ha.... did the weld puddle just magically move against gravity chasing the magnet? I could see that being confusing as hell until you realized what was happening.

  • Thats funny. :)

What's really funny is that the fact that by stating he learned something confirms, by corollary, that he doesn't know everything ! , Unless of course , that was the last fact that he did not already know. :innocent: Sorry Keith , had to go there.

Would like to see a video of a weld puddle being pulled by a magnet.

Nobody belongs anywhere, nobody exists on purpose, everybody's going to die. Have a beer.

  • This obviously has been painted, but this was the setup.

It pulled it toward the rod and off of the flat stock.

Maybe because of it's small mass the rod became a rather strong magnet.

A couple times I thought I had it tacked and there was no penetration whatsoever into the flat stock.

  • I wonder if the magnet could be used to pull the weld deeper into the joint if put on the opposite side of the welding area.
