2 D44's in the back of my XJ? hehe?

wellp I maybe going your route anyway....I Just found out the rear may have only been regeared to 5.38s and the front hasnt been regeared yet.... :upset: , Which aint a huge deal to me because I wanted to remove the spool from the rear anyway and put a lunchbox In It....I still think Its worth It because their beefy axles that are already set-up for an XJ ready to bolt In, plus It has the warn lockout hubs in the front....And that axles should be strong enough for up to 37's If I ever decide to go that big...

Bring them both home and sell the front for the cost to regear the rear. Or at least teh cost of the other rear. What gears are in the front axle?

  • could do that....The only reason Im really Inclined to keep the front is because Its "bolt in", yea I may have to change the gears but....Its ready to rock and Its a stronger axle then the D30 from what I'v heard? The only other axle out there bolt in for a XJ front is the TJ front 44's and their close to 600-1000 a pop....I like that all the mounts have already been welded up and everything because thats alot of work....

  • plus not to mention after their bolted in...I'll have a Dana 30 with a detroit and 3.55s to sell, plus a 29 spline 8.25 axle...so I should be able to make my money back there...

  • Josh like i said saturday, stick with what you have, the HP30 you have is already good enough, just needs alloy shafts, the 8.25 is not far from a D44 in strength. I know many people running HP30s on 35s and 37s without an issue....

  • yea I hear ya but in the end It would cost more Just for the 30 spline alloys....when both the 44's will already be 30 spline....I think Im gonna get them for as cheap as they are...then If plans change later I have two nice axles I could make some money on or drop the rear in my XJ...

  • If you get the 44s....Plan on changing your wheels also as they are most likely a 5 on 5.5" bolt pattern if not 6 or 8 lug......

well their out of a J-10, 1/2 ton D44's, been moded to bolt up to an XJ, 6x5.5 bp, the sellers pretty confident their geared to 5.38's but hes not 100% sure, the rear is spooled, and the fronts not locked to his knowledge...

only problem is I have to go pull them, he doesnt have any tools (not even Jackstands or Jacks), so I have to bring my own and hope I dont run Into any problems...Its a 4-1/2 hr drive...so lets say It takes me 4 hours to pull both axles with hand tools  , then 4-1/2 hr drive home...Its gonna be one long #$$ day....

but the price is totally worth It.....

    yup thats no problem though....

  • I know ware a 78 ford f150 is for cheep . It has 31 spline 9" in the rear and a d44 in the front . I think the gears are 350 . you can get the whole truck fore less than you are going to pay fore those axels and you can drive it home

    85 cj7 4" suspension 1" body lift on 33X13.50 swampers , Ford 9" / arb , t18 trans , dana 300 t case , and a efi 5.0 from a 93 gt . ( soon to have dana 44 and arb in the front )

  • although thats a good deal, and a 9" would be sweet, there'd be alot of welding work and I'd have to buy alot of bracketry to make It work. Now If Its ready to go under an XJ, thats a different story, Im ready to buy in that case

  • thats true I definatley hear what your sayin, the rig is running Just in shyty condition, and I think the reason It had 5.38's is because Its a 2.5L, 4 banger, 5 speed with 35x12.50's

I might see If I can cut a better deal with him, I'm pretty confident I could get my money back on these things re-selling them, but I may do what John mentioned, keep the rear 44, regear It to say 4.88's, then sell the front to pay for regearing my D30 to 4.88's and throwing in some alloys...will see though what happens...
