I need to remove and straighten (read undent) the gas tank skid on my 03 TJ and was wondering if when I remove the skid plate bolts will the tank still be suspended by the straps allowing me to work on the plate or is the plate the only thing that supports the tank? on a side note how much gas are you guys getting in a 19 gal tank. Even when my fuel light goes on I can still only get about 13.5 to 14 gallons in it. is there really that much (5-5.5 gal) left, is the dent in my skid plate (not that big) limiting the tank volume, is is this what you guys are also getting? thanks

Straps hold the tank inside of the skid IIRC .
The OM for my 03 says that when the light comes one there is only 3 gallons left .
I've never really paid that much attention to how much it hold when I fill it .
I don't let it get down that low . -
The light can depend on how badly you have the tank smashed. It may make the fuel sit funny in relation to the float. The tank is held into the skid with the straps. You will have to drop the entire tank. I would say leave it alone until you are ready to buy something like a Rokmen tank.

Messing with those plastic clips that hold the fuel lines together is a freakin nightmare.

the dent in the skid plate is only about .5 to .75 inch deep so maybe well enough is good, but it would be nice to be able to get a little more gas into it in order to increase the range above about 170 miles between fill ups. this sound about right to anybody else? anybody getting much more for range? btw 4.0, auto, 3.73's, 31's, 1.5 inch lift.

190 is about the most I can get. Most times 170 is about right.

The tank is strapped to the skid so they come down together. The fuel clips on my (2002) were easy to release with my hands. I had the tank out in ten minutes.
That said I pulled my tank down to raise it and bang out the dents. It was pretty caved in and fixing that gained me somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 of a gallon, so not worth the effort if that is your only concern. But raising the tank was worth it for the extra clearance.
My tank holds 19 gallons and the light comes on at around 14.5 so there is plenty of fuel left. I usually go between 225 and 250 miles and it takes 16 to 17 gallons.
